How can this website rank so high??

Hi all,

I'm in the process of creating a movie review site and noticed this website is always at the top of the search results for keywords related to "movies".

I tried getting some analytic plugins to see why it's so high but I'm not quite as smart as a lot of you guys here who do SEO.

It seems basic, but could you tell me why this ranks so high and what I could do (or copy) that would rank up with his site? goodmovieslist dot com

Backlinks from sites like ask.com, Dmoz, and plenty more high authority sites..
Very natural diversified anchors profile.

Whoever owns the site is working on it for several years, so i think he deserves such positions.

Like the person above said, it seems this website has a lot of good natural links that weren't bought as well as natural social signals. It seems like a pretty informative website with a lot of content that gets updated regularly. Basically, if you want to get the same results you gotta work your ass off.

Are referring domains kinda like back links? I'm still trying to figure out the difference.

And social signals you mean G+, FB, Twitter, etc?

Referring domain is where your backlinks are coming from, and backlinks are the links on the websites that link back to your site. Think of the referring domain as a phone number and backlinks as the number of times you've gotten a call from that particular number.

Yes it is correct and majesticseo or ahrefs would be good to find backlinks of a domain.

Good page authority and Domain authority, so no wonder it is being ranked high.

AS I see you new to SEO jungle . I'm not familiar to Movies review niche but clearly it's very very competitive niche . you better search in sub categories on any niche you want to target . so you'll have better chances .

Referring domain is nothing but links from unique domain.
You may get 2, 3, even more links from single domain, but referring domain count it as 1.
Hope you got the point.social signals are fb shares/likes, G+, twitter tweets /retweets.
You can get all the info for a particular website from ahref.
