Why Is Google Webmaster Showing Higher Rankings Than Actual Google?

I have a keyword that, according to Google Webmaster, ranks #8. I see that when I check the average position on the search queries tab.

Cool.

So I Google that keyword and I don't see my site at #8. In fact, I don't see my site in the first three pages. In fact, I don't see my site at all.

How is this possible? Has anyone else seen this?

When you look at the search queries section you get the average position for each keyword during the last 30 days. So may be you wereranking good for 15 days and another 15 ranking bad. That could have make an average #8.

If you want to see more up to date rankings there you should reduce the timeframe to the last available day.

WMT is not reliable for your rankings, but can give you an idea on where you could be ranking. Takes an average, not specific.

GWT showing your last 30 days status and when you click particular that keyword and then you will get real actual ranking status.. and particular page URL ranking.... and it will give you idea in which country your keyword ranking...

There is a thing that I call "ghosting", it happens only for keywords with 800-1000+ searches per month. If you over optimize, send to many backlinks, or anchors that are overotpimzied, that keyword becomes ghosted - you see it ranked 1-10 on wmt but can't see on the actual search results on any position.

Fix this by sending random anchor backlinks and de-optimizing h1 title of the page.

It is the problem of average. It does not give you ranking on particular day. so there may be a difference.

google webmaster show their result sometime with fluctuation. May be for reason it showing like this. Did you check with another keyword position checker? if check then what is their result?

Google Webmaster doesn't just show results from web. They also show Images, Videos and Mobile. So that is probably it! On some keywords i can't find my own site on the top 10 pages but in some keywords my image is rank 1. So that is probably your answer
