Buying an IP to use as Proxy

Does anyone know the steps behind this? I could imagine having another computer set up, buying another cable service, and installing the appropriate software BUT it has to be cheaper than that..

I have tons of old computers around the house.
My main computer has a quad and is capable of running many Virtual Machines, but I'm just confused how people can get away with selling 10 separate IP addresses as unique proxies for like $30ish when internet service around my area is $50+..

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

because they are not ISP IP.. they are VPNs from web hosts.

They just buy a clase C subnet for exampple: 111.111.111.2-254

ISP IPs are very very expensive

sooo If say I wanted to buy a couple European proxies I could buy a class C subnet? but from where?

or should I look into getting an account with a UK web hoster and setup a VPN on their server?

This is how I think they work:

they buy a dedicated server with a lot of bandwidth. get tons of ips. i would say they get 1 small server in USA, 1 in canada, 1 in uk .. buy ips for each .. my host providers 16 USA ips for $10.. or 128 USA ips for $40..

set up squid proxy server. assign 1 ip per 1 user. set vpn username and password for that user. do additional config. sell 1 VPN for $10 each.

if you have 1 server (max $80/90 .. linux servers are cheaper than windows) .. with $40 for 128 ips .. you sell 128 vpns at 10 each, $1280 per mo. easily covers your cost and brings profit

no wayyyy they use their home internet, your isp will go crazy since u have internet for residential use!!

i'm googling my butt off right now to find a UK web host offering a legit price for ~30 extra IP's
after i find a nice place i'll read up on squid proxy server
i'm familiar with squid but never actually utilized it

anyone have any UK / European web hosts offering multiple IP's?

what country are you looking at in europe? i'm not sure of europe but leaseweb can probably hook you up with a nice amsterdam server.

whenever I ask my host for extra IP. they always want to ask why, I think buying bunches of IP addresses is not easy, I read somewhere there is a shortage of a IPs and eventually the present IP address system will have to be replaced. or has been replaced with IP ver 6

Well.. you have to ask them if they allow VPNs... and plus, I guess you are asking for more IPs on a shared host. To run a VPN server to need a virtual or private server.
so they are two different things completely.

for usa, i have a cheap server from h4y.us. its limited bandwidth tho so you might want to check into that. its pretty easy overall if you have a little linux experience.

As for extra IPs.. tell them you are hosting several clients and they want dedicated IPs for their hosting. or they want dedicated IPs for FTP. or they want private nameservers for their hosting. or private SSL certificates
