Nothing more than the normal links you get back to your site.

If you get 0 backlinks one day and then 500, it is a huge transition.

too many backlinks too fast can get you devalued if the sites are not high credibility (ie viral explosion). the same rule goes for too much new content too fast. the best practice (as mentioned by another user) is consistency - find a rate of new backlinks that you can maintain.

Thinking about this though, the problem with this might be viral sites. Do viral sites rank especially well in SERPS compared to sites with the same quality of links, but created at a more natural pace?

I guess if there's really only one site competing for a phrase like "numa numa kid" and it was the first site to mention the phrase ever then the unnatural linking is allowed to be valid. Then again, its not that hard to rank for a made up phrase either way.

If your site is new, you want to be careful about too many links at once. If your site is old, you can try fast link building and you should be fine. Also, make sure you keep up with the link building. Google doesn't like it if you get 500 links one month and 2nd month, you get 5. Looks very unnatural. So, pick a number and slowly reach that number and stick with it.

For example, lets say you started out with 100 links this month, next month go for 200 links, month after go for 500 link and after 1000. Stay around 1000 for a while and add maybe 100 more the month after. The point is to look natural and grow slowly.

Also, think about those press releases. When they get released, they are distributed all over within 24-48 hours and google won't slap you silly for those backlinks.

just make backlinks at a healthy pace..not that 1000 in one day then making 50 for 2 days and then 1000 again...just try to make it to any PR at a steady rate!!!

I have a site thats 2 months old, and I've been building 20-60 backlinks per day, going up nicely in SERPs. Getting links is easy.

However, I keep hearing people talking about relevancy and saying comment and target site relevancy is important. Why exactly is this the case? I don't see how the spiders care to be honest. It's all about anchor text, PR and ********
