Nofollow links effective? Contextual links not a must?

I read quite a bit about nofollow links and I always read that they didn't transfer any link juice, however, today I did some research on a competitor who ranks number 1 for many keywords in the fitness niche and found out that he has 6,777 links, 6,755 of those being nofollow and the majority of these really spammy, like porn and gambling.

Did I read the wrong thing about nofollow links? Are they actually effective?

And did I also read the wrong thing about contextual links? This website doesn't have ANY contextual links and they all come from porn and gambling sites or have porn and gambling anchor texts, yet it has been ranking in number one for hundreds of fitness keywords for almost a year.

Can anyone comment on this? I am seriously thinking of just blasting thousands of nofollow links blindly.

Combination of both "no follow & Do follow" worked well, But still confusing how he ranked with only 22 DFL?
I think he blasted year ago, some links may died . Have you seen the no of links dropped? and also which tool you are using to analyze?

If its normal website then they are using PBN for ranking and nofollow for diversifying.

Im using Ahrefs to analyze. All those links seem live.

That makes sense.. He blocks bots from the PBN? But if he blocks access to the PBN how does his website get the linkjuice? Haven't done my research on PBNs.

Just start research on PBN you will come to know everything.
