I have been thinking about "borrowing" some of my competitors Meta Tags to use on my site. I have not fould anything anywhere that looks like it is illegal to do so.

Is this effective? I have a extractor I have been playing around with.

Meta's have nothing to do with rankings. So why would you do that?

Meta tags are not something you need to waist your time on. My new WP theme I'm using don't even have meta tag box.

OK so now I am totally confused. I though Meta tags placed your sites keywords into a SE. So the better quality of the tags the higher you should show up under a keyword search. I guess I am showing off my stupidity here.

That's stupid. they have nothing to do with rankings

I don't understand some of the replies really. Meta tags, especially the title tag plays an important role for your keyword rankings.

You are probably mixing the h1 h2 h4 tags with meta tags.

Search engines are ignoring the meta tags.

Titles are very effective but they are not considered metatags. Metatags content is not visible to the human visitor since their purpose is just to provide meta information to the web crawlers.

By the way, Google does not take metatags as a ranking factor: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.es/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html

Neither does Yahoo since 2009: http://searchengineland.com/yahoo-search-no-longer-uses-meta-keywords-tag-27303

Just shows how little I know and how much help I need.

Title tag and a few other meta tags are HUGE for seo. Some of the comments in this thread are crazy. If you want to believe what G or other SE's tell you go right ahead. They lie for a reason.
You can borrow meta's, but focus mainly on the Title and Header tags (Htags). Keyword + brand is what you should be focusing on.

Good luck.

Yes, meta title, description, and Htags are still really releavant. Just ignore the meta keywords. In my opinion, better to modify those yourself to make them better.
