Lose Google Ranking After Updating A Post

I really need to update one of my post, the post has good rank with its keyword on google search , but am afraid i may lose the ranking and backlinks after updating , What do you think ?

If you don't update the URL which make a 404 error, so you don't need to worry about SERP rankings. Google will not decrease your search rankings if you don't increase the keyword density. Make sure your keywords and the intent behind them. They matter a lot!

I assume that you are using Wordpress.

You need to make sure that once you update the content, the keyword density stays almost the same. You can leave the title as is.

If you change the title, make sure that your keyword is still included. You don't have to change the url.

If you change the Title and the url, you'll have to redirect it, either via (if you're using WP) Redirection plugin or htaccess.


Personally, I would go for the safest way; Write a new content with a variation of the keyword of the ranking post (if ranking post's keyword is "blue widget", then write a new entry with the target keyword like "best blue widgets", "great blue widgets", "blue widgets collection", you get the idea) and then link to your already-ranking content. That way you don't have to risk the rank of your first keyword and now you have a new content supporting it.

If you just update the content, you could see an increase or decrease in ranking depending on the changes. I've updated a few of my old articles recently and the changes in ranking were all positive (for example, one of the articles was ranking in the 8th position on average for a keyword I was targeting before I updated the article, but now the average ranking position is 3.5).

If you change the URL, then be sure to do a 301 (permanent) redirect. This will transfer over 90% of the link juice to the new link and let the search engines know that the URL has moved to a new, permanent address.

It's safer if you don't change your title at all.

If you must, just make sure your URL isn't changing (double check the URL link at the top of your edit screen didn't change as you changed the title of the post). This is easier than a 301.

Do you need to change all the content? If you can get away with a small edit, go for that

if it the content and your adding quality and upto date content then you will have no negative effect , make sure while your change the title keep the same url . use yoast for setting title and other metas

i thought you were using wordpress , why not create a another post and and interlink them (edit the previous post and add a link to new one )

Then go for the 4th option. Create a new post and then link it to the old post that is already ranking.
