How to create a Forum?

If you don't know how to create one, I doubt you'll be able to maintain it.
But sure, phpBB is a free, open source option.
There also is paid platforms such as vBulletin or Xenforo.

you can make free forums on some sites that offer them for free, so you can have your subdomain..
like: magija12.forumer.com or myforum.prophpbb.com almost every one of them runs on phpbb platform... or you can purchase your own domain and instal a phpbb forum script or some other http://www.opensourcecms.com/scripts/show.php?catid=5 but I suggest a phpbb ...
some hosts have softaculus from where you can choose what forum script you can instal..

I own two forum websites that have been online since 2011. I use Invision Power Board.
To create it, you just install the software, make your categories and forums. Set permissions and all that stuff. Pretty easy.
Although, I will say I wound up putting the forum on a sub domain and installing wordpress in the root directory for better SEO. It's possible to silo a forum but have more control with wordpress in the front driving traffic through pages with good on page optimization, etc.
Forums are useful if your niche has some DIY topics (like SEO
), or you have a product to support etc.

Probably not best way to do it. Without any experience at all I'd say it's better to install your forum in a sub folder instead of a sub-domain as the authority doesn't get passed between the two.
site.com/forum/ instead of forum.site.com

I thought about that. but then I realized that my forums have a HUGE member base with many daily users. Installing it on a sub domain allowed me to laser focus the type of content that google associates my website with, without all the user generated off topic stuff. Panda is a real bitch, and using a subdomain allows that user generated (crappy) content to be treated as a separate site (better SEO).
The results have been amazing over the last 18 (ish) months. Panda about killed us before that.

There are scripts that you could use for the same, though I don't think it would be a good idea creating one if you lack experience.

you literally have to build a following. It's about being a brand with a forum, more so than a lot of things. If you can get people to support your brand, your brand ideas, your brand personality, they will do all the work for you, for free. At least thats how mine are now, but it was a lot of work at first. I have 5 admins and 12 moderators that literally do everything for me. They just hit me up on FB for administrative decisions mostly. I might spend 2-3 hours throughout the week dealing with forum issues.
