Purely based on domain extension, assuming ceteris paribus? Or is it too early to tell and testing still has to drip down from the top SEO specialists? :-)
Was wondering as it can apply to hundreds of examples now such as NewYork.Pizza or NewYorkPizza.com.
My question might be irrelevant because big G bashed EMD's, but still :)

Assuming they have the same backlink profile, age, authority and so on, .com would rank higher in my opinion.

Mostly .com emd's are up for ages and have huge authority, you can try compete with them using service type extentions with better content and seo.

BostonDentist Rank's much better and easier then Boston.Dentist

Well not really, the .com is more appealing to visitors, and will rank better most likely, but I wouldn't say it like that. Makes it sound like the domain will rank itself.

All the new fancy TLDs like .dentist, .pizza, .vegas, .guru will be treated the same like any other TLD so having one or the another won't make any difference but it may change in the future when Google fine tunes their algorithm and gives boost to the categorized TLD.

Why not get both and the redirect BostonDentistdotcom to BostondotDentist? People are lazy now so the latter is much easier to remember and type.
