Lets say i publish a unique article on my site.
It gets picked up by Google.

a month later someone copies my content (text only) and uses it on there own site.

Does this have any effect on my site now it has become duplicated???

Google will rank the article that is indexed first. If anyone publishes it later on their site then it will be them who are regarded as using duplicate content.

That's an old trick and Google has caught onto it.

On the original article, just add a rel canonical tag with the permanent URL on it. In case they're foolish enough to copy all the HTML verbatim, it serves as a link back to your content

Nice idea, add a rel canonical tag on the permanent URL. and it will be serves link back to your content.

I had someone do this with the very first article I wrote that got any traction at all. Not being sure what to do, I just stated that it was originally mine and gave a link in his comments. Probably not the best reaction, but I can't find his site anymore : )

No, it does not effect on your site anymore, The article posted from your site were already indexed by google.
