Selling ads for business owners

Let's say I get money from a business owner to promote his business by selling ads on flyers/cards/whatever and I distribute this stuff to normal people.

How can I prove after I did it, that I actually did it?

Well I would think you would have some type of a promotional coupon on those flyers etc ... so that when potential clients call or go to website are able to use that code and in turn your business owner can track your progress ...

that would be one way ..

No coupons, just ad with logo and #.

How can I prove it then?

If it's just a phone number, have the business owner or their salespeople ask how they heard of it. It doesn't sound like even the business owner has a good game plan here.
