Terrorists Holding People Hostage In Sydney, Australia

I swear, if they were holding the entire crew of the Today show hostage, I wouldn't bat any eyelid. Seriously, the news here is a f*cking joke.

A little bit inside was thinking "I hope Koche is in there"

Watching it live in New Zealand. Shit is crazy. Almost certain there will be a suicide at the end there.

The whole world should take action on this, not only AUS..
I condemn terrorists, I condemn ISS.

The truth is, nobody actually knows what it's tied to. It's a black flag praising God, which doesn't necessarily mean ISIS. It honestly could be just a crazy person looking to get media attention. Australian media is all over the place today with call outs on what is happening. Truth is, it's still happening and he hasn't spoken a word.

You couldn't be more right, but not for the reason you might expect. Do you know how bad it's going to be hearing about this crap on the morning news with that douche-bag Karl Stefanovic? I'm cringing just at the thought of it. I swear, if they were holding the entire crew of the Today show hostage, I wouldn't bat any eyelid. Seriously, the news here is a f*cking joke.

Apologies to those from the US, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. Those from Oz, I'm sure you can sympathize.

I'm watching it live on youtube, and am not used to news like this. In the US, they would have interviewed the kidnapper's neighbor, mother-in-law, and third grade teacher by now. This news station has been repeating the same thing for 11 hours.

Welcome to Straya

Sure hope everyone gets out safe and sound this is a horrible situation this person is putting them through, saying prayers for them ..

I do have to admire that, they're actually keeping from stirring the situation into any new direction, letting the police be in control.

Hopefully the police are up to the job, wonder if we'll see the SASR storm the place, hopefully won't come to that, but they might be just what is needed if things don't go well with the negotiation.

I have a lot of friends in Sydney, having lived there for almost 4 years - one of them just told me about this, which is heart warming:

Anti-Islamic sentiment has flooded social media in the wake of the Sydney siege

but there is a campaign gathering steam that will restore your faith in humanity.
A Twitter movement, #illridewithyou, has sprouted with everyday Australians offering to ride on buses and trains with Muslims, or give them a lift to work tomorrow, in order to keep them safe.

Here's a link to the story with a selection of the 'I'll ride with you' tweets.

Some people try to make the world a worse place - but there are far more who try to make it better

The Australian Media is so horrible they should have played the audio and ignored the police requests.

Lots of stuff happening, does anybody know how many have escaped now? The news says 5-7 but is that new this morning or is that 5-7 more? I had to lay my head down for 8 hours; last I heard before bed it was 5 total that escaped.

Edit: Oh wow, check this out:

Police: "Sydney siege is over. More details to follow."

"#BREAKING @CNN reports #sydneysiege appears to be over. Two people are confirmed dead, three in serious condition."

Darn, looks like I tuned in too late. Whether a robery or terrorism, those guys really fowled it up.

This guy was free on bail. He had raped one woman, and he also participated in the killing of his ex wife. She was stabbed and set on fire in her apartment. He should have been in jail.

He should have been deported after he was convicted of rape.

Mate you got it all wrong, Australia is where the Brits dumped the criminals, they can't just toss them out from here!

But yeah, I agree with RR, why the hell was that guy out on bail... If not the rape and murder, then at least the setting on fire part should have told everybody that he didn't belong anywhere but a cell.
