Getting a Degree

Hi,

I'm 23 now and all education I have is high school.

I want to do IM-ing full time and I want to get a degree.

Getting a degree is a must in my opinion, and that's why:
a. it will make me a smarter person with a better vision of things, which will help me make smarter decision based on knowledge
b. I want to learn things which will help me with IM-ing

I want to learn something which I need university to learn it. I will clarify - being a programmer isn't something that can be taught only at university. you can become a good programmer if you learn on your own (of course there are nitty gritty and special positions which you need university experience, but mostly it can be taught online).
In comparison to being a doctor, which is something that you cannot learn without going to university.

Just to clarify:
* I want a degree that will help me do IM-ing full time
* I want a degree which I need university to learn it and that I cannot learn online

Any ideas for a degree which will give me what I want?

You are looking at 6 years+ if you are thinking of getting an M.D. ("doctor's degree").

If you really want to get a degree, look for something shorter man. A Bsc/Bs/BEng takes 3 years.

Getting a degree is no walk in the park but can be achieved, and you do learn more about certain aspects for instance i'm a law student and now i am more clued up on the laws in my country. Oh yeah and i passed my semester with a distinction ( papers weren't easy) , got results yesterday

You can try for a marketing or business management degree (not sure if thats applicable)

I'm sure it's a hard work, but I'm just fine with it, I'm not afraid of hard work.

I'm just not sure which degree will help me the most.\

I have thought of philosophy but I'm not good at things aren't math-based.. just cannot memorize things and such stuff - I'm not that type (I always wanted to be that memorizing-guy.. nah)

Yes with hard work and dedication you will get that degree. Honestly i am not a math person that is why i opted for something with more notes, don't get me wrong as Law does include maths in some modules. Just do some research and see what you find more interesting, compare it to what you're good at. Business economics include maths , Business Science, Any good business degree.

It's really up too you and which you feel more comfortable with

IM plus study together is not really easy, but with hard dedication you can get degree. Go with BBA (2 years) I'm not saying that it is easy but it is not really hard, You can easily pass all semesters. I believe you are good in math, You can also go with BSCS which is all about programming, maths and computer.

It is a phenomenon, everybody here starts learning anywhere between 21-23, I'm a bit late I guess but it's somewhere in these years..
I had an epiphany about this degree thing, some years ago I thought that I can "get away" with it and not get a degree on purpose, but than I realised that it is way more than "getting a diploma". You are actually getting smarter and have a better perspective in your thinking. you are just paying to become smarter, I see it is a good investment now

A degree will raise your self-esteem and your price in eyes of others, but practical skills are valued much more than academical knowledge.
I think that some of the things you'll learn on this forum are not included in curriculum of any university.

I think that you are partially right. I do believe that things which you learn on your own are much more valued than academic knowledge.
But I also think that becoming an educated man can help me raising the bar of thinking, and this will help me doing my marketing way better. I think that any experience in life is developing your thinking. I think that educating in a university is one of these things. You go into a new phase of your life, leaving the old things aside and working with new people on new ideas.

If you believe you can get away without a degree and still become just as smart and thoughtful then that will also be true for you.

I cannot agree with what you said about "paying to become smarter". That shows me your thinking isn't straight and you should reconsider and think things through properly. I think the best thing about going to get a degree is not the degree or the work but the people you can potentially meet and connect but even that might not always work out.

There's a saying and it's true, unfortunately I cannot remember it or find the video I am thinking of, but it's basically something to do with "being in business" in order to "be in business". This might not make much sense, it would if I could find the awesome video but the main idea here is that you pretty much learn as you go along and you piece the puzzle together step by step. With each step you learn something new and your perspective/knowledge expands, so whatever you do, as long as you do something and you treat it like business, you will learn you will learn a lot, you will gain experience, you will gain perspective, you will start networking with like minded people, and well you will find your way as long as you've got what it takes.

Keep in mind that a degree takes time and you're already 23, do it for the right reasons and find the most suitable degree, a lot of the knowledge (depending on the subject) will become obsolete by the time you finish the degree. So make sure you do your research and actually go for a degree that will give you options rather than be a true waste of time.

I could write an essay but that would be to much so in short, do your research, make sure you know what you really want to do, and make a firm decision before you take action.

Try to get a degree in a health-related field. 99% of health related information are pure garbage, and marketers perpetuate that bullshit further.

That way, you have skills that are highly valuable, because you can make a site that is actually evidence based and really helps people, instead of selling them snake oil or "all natural" bullshit.... of course "without chemicals" *facepalm*.

OP, Colleges do not have a monopoly on education, so becoming "educated" doesn't mean having a degree, it means you are learning through either through others (formal and informal transmission), through your environment, or by yourself (autodidacticism). Getting a degree for the sake of getting a degree is as asinine as asking people on an Internet marketing forum, who also do not know anything about you, which degree you should get.

I'm curious about what made you come to the conclusion that getting just any degree will benefit you? Was it because your friends have a degree and now you want one (bandwagon effect)? Were you constantly bombarded by advertisements telling you that you need one (targeted advertising/marketing)? What is the reasoning behind this?

That's the thing, the worst choice you can make is the choice you make because of someone else. It's peer pressure that makes a lot of people get a degree. It's also the fact that people are brought up to pass stages, you start with your primary school, move onto high school, then maybe something in between and then College/University. You progress through these stages and what next? Well, you move onto employment, you start a family, you work and then you die.

Some are worried about the future of humanity when it comes to artificial intelligence, they're worried that robots will take over the world. I believe they should worry about what is going on now because this is already happening, we already have robots taking over the world, it's just that they're slightly different, they're biological robots.

I have the same mindset as you - that education isn't always coming from getting a degree.
One of the ways to do all the things you said is to get a degree. (piece the puzzle together, learn new things, expand your perspective, meet people, etc)
All of these things happen when you get a degree. I think that some people can get there without a degree, but I think that most people have some sort of education before they made their fortune. Because you meet people during the learning, and lots of options becomes available to you during the learning.

You may be right about me being short sighted here, and that's why I have started this thread, I actually wanted to know what others think of this.
People here usually starts their degree when they are 22, so I'm not that much far behind to start one.
I'm not looking after a degree which will give me options, I'm looking after something which will expand the way that I'm thinking about things. Something which will allow me to do things that I cannot do because that I'm not able to think about them right now.
I'm trying to do my research, and part of it is this thread

As you have read, I want to get a degree to open my mind. I'm not looking after a written diploma that I can put on the wall, I'm also not looking to get a job using this diploma. I'm looking after something which will enrich my mind. If I can find something which is in some way related to marketing - I have found a bonus package.
Only one of my friends have a degree right now, and he is not doing anything good with it, so not that's not the cause.
I also not going after adverts or anything similiar. I just honestly think that there are stuff that can be taught only in university.
For example, if I wanted to start an offline business I would probably want to get a degree in lawyering - because you cannot learn it off the university! (at least not at my country)
The internet era made everything available within 2 clicks of the mouse, but yet there are lot of things which are not online and which you cannot learn only with the internet, even if you are the most autodidact guy in the world.

From my experience a degree isn't necessarily needed. I went to school for psych, got hurt playing football my jr. Year and that was it. I dropped out got a $13 A Hr. Job, worked that for 3 years, left there making about 35 for a job making 52. That's when I got interested in im, learned all on my own and started having success. Then moved to the agency world and now have a great job at a major online publisher as a product manager and a side seo business, none of which would have happened had I followed the college path and gotten a job in the psych field.

I bet you do, because marketing and psych are the same thing. and that's why I think it is good.
