I hate it when other people on this forum say this, but "read the forums". You'll learn nearly everything you need to know. This question is too general to answer since there are so many methods you could use and factors that could affect how your website ranks. To sum up what you need to do, you basically:

The best way to rank will depend on your preferred methods (black hat or white hat), niche (general cars can be quite competitive), domain history, backlinks, and more factors. Typing them all out here would be time consuming, so I'll just give you a link to 200 ranking factors (some proven, some not) to give you an idea.
- Do keyword research
- Build quality backlinks (use tools such as Majestic or Moz to determine the quality)
- Create quality content
- Remove/fix/spin duplicate pages
- Drive traffic (organically, with PPC, etcetera)
- Maintain your website
- Analyse your website
- Disavow/remove backlinks that are hurting your website
- Create a Google+ business page (mostly for local search)
But again, this question is too general for me to give you a good answer. Zwielicht just gave probably the best advice you're going to get. It's a lot more difficult to rank now than it used to be. So many things you have to watch out for that might have a negative effect instead of beneficial.

"How to Rank" implies you are about to share some method on how to rank.
"How to Rank?" lets people know that you're looking for suggestions on how to rank.

Keyword research is the first basic for ranking sites & engaging relevant traffic.

You just need to follow search engines rules to get website ranking. Website content is most important part. SEO activities like forums posting, blog posting, backlinks generation, PR submission, guest blogging are equally important. Social media business page needs to created on major social media websites. You also need to keep these pages updated. I would recommend you to use Google webmaster tool to check whether website content proper keywords, website links, does website crawl, sitemap etc.

3. Create EMD site
4. Create quality content on your site
(Best thing to do this is, go to google KWP then put your main keyword and click keyword ideas then if you see some longtail KWs use it, create content under that LTKWs and put it on your site, be sure that those LTKWs do have your main KW in it so it will get rank good as well)
5. Look for niche related HIGH PR sites
6. Create backlinks with those sites
7. Create Social Networking sites that allows you to post your MS link
8. Contribute to those SN sites by liking, reblogging, posting, commenting and etc
(This will make your links to be passed on different SN profiles)
9. Wait for those links to be indexed naturally
10. RANK and BANK!

You should start at Zero, first of all, your industry seems to be very competitive. You should calculate your Keyword Opposition to Benefit(Amazing Keyword Research based on the competence)
Keyword Research:
First you will need a keywords lists, you can get awesome queries based on Search Volume from Google Keyword Planner and Ubersuggest, both free. Or use a paid tool like Semrush that gives also information about your competence.
Google Keyword Planner will also gives you the Search Volume and CPC from each keyword. This is very important because the Benefit of a keyword is = Search Volume * CPC.
Okey, with that info you will get a normal Keyword Research, if you want Rock, you will need to analyze the Opposition Score of each Keyword, and you can do it with Moz.

- Images: You can get traffic via Google images, use the alt tag with some description of the image
- Meta Description: doesn't help with Google but is what users see at Search Engines and may define if they click or not.
- Content: is one of the primary things that make your site rank. your pages should have 500 words
- Robots: If you have products on different pages that the unique difference is the color, you should don't allow index those pages. You can do it with Robot.txt
- Sitemaps: XML sitemaps helps Google Bots with the indexation presenting a logical architecture of the site.
- Title: Is the first thing that an User see at Search Engines, use your keyword.

Read about onpage seo, you dont need to have your keyword in your domain to rank.

It depends on what industry you are. I don't think you are in "car" industry because that was more like an example to see the level of competition. A type of campaign would be to start planning the content, to know before what to post. That's always a good strategy. You need to have a good list of keywords to use, but don't focus on the keywords, topics are gold now. Good, and important content on the website and spread all over internet can get you some big results and better than other techniques.
Quality content will always be appreciated by niche sites and influencers can share it. It's all about quality rather than quantity. It use to be the same before, but now it's in vain if you write about the same "poetry" on the site. You need to come with good analysis, good content which will target your audience.
