need some help fast with this, messed up my vps

Well i took all my website down by mistake, i changed file owner permission doing chown -hR www-data:www-data /var/, i was trying to avoid wordpress asking for ftp creditial and now everything is wiped off, i cant even login by ssh with normal ip but just by solusvm panel with special user. Any idea please.

Try creating another user and give it privileges to access all directories and change the ownership. For ex., If your current special user name is root, create another user as admin/administrator. Also, don't worry all the files will remain intact. You just don't have permissions to see the data. Your host will be able to better assist you in this situation.

This is why you need to have a backup plugin like backupbuddy backing up your data every other day to Dropbox/S3.

Moving forward, you could also close your directories and do all your changes in a non live environment and make sure everything is good before making the changes on the live version of your site.

Why on Earth would you chown /var to www-data? /var holds much more than just www related data. With those permissions it's no wonder you're having problems. If you're willing to give me the login details for the VPS, I can take a look.

I don't think its only the OP that has had a moment of finger madness and done stuff like that - I have done exactly the same and lets not even start about rm-rf and the wrong folder name!!

True. There should be mandatory two factor authentication via SMS to perform rm -rf <any of the default system directories>
