VPNs - static IP address or dynamic/shared ip address?

Hello,

I am planning on creating several accounts at a certain website. Their policy is of course, only one account per person or computer. I figured a VPN server would change my ip address. I would create several accounts each under a different VPN server. I have been doing a lot of general reading on VPNs. A lot of people use them for illegal downloading or torrenting. For this, most places I read recommend dynamic/shared ip addresses as opposed to static ip addresses because dynamic changes/more secure and is difficult to point back some activity to a particular individual, where a static ip could. Problem is, if it is dynamic/shared then the ip address on a certain VPN server will change from time to time. Wouldn't that create red flags when logging into a particular account associated with say a VPN server in Atlanta? Or does it not matter ip changes as long as it still says you are in Atlanta and account is not flagged then? Certainly in marketing, being banned from Google, facebook for example, you had to create new accounts with different ip addresses? Did those ip addresses need to be static or dynamic? I was thinking static so it does not change but then all general VPN articles I've read recommends dynamic for security. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A few general pointers:

(1) Dynamic IP addresses shouldn't raise any flags with most online services so long as all your IP addresses originate from the same class C block or the same ISP and general region. In this regard, you'll be fine so long as you are assigned an IP address from the same subnet every time you connect to a specific VPN server or set of VPN servers.

(2) However, please be advised that the overwhelming majority of VPN servers use IP addresses from data centers, cloud services and so on and so forth. On the other hand, 'real' users typically originate traffic from IP addresses assigned to a residential ISP or wireless provider. As such, logging into a site with a VPN or data center IP address may immediately raise flags with some sites.

(3) With a shared IP address, you have no control over what others users do or might have done with the shared IP address. So don't be surprised if a site blocks you outright or asks you to perform more captchas than normal.

(4) Tor is a useful service under certain circumstances, especially if anonymity is your concern. However, some sites are very suspicious of Tor users or any user switching their IP address constantly or even every other session. Moreover, some sites will ask you to re-authenticate with a phone number if you switch IP addresses (beyond the scope of a single subnet) every session.

Will be happy to answer additional questions, but please keep in mind that IP addresses and cookies are not the only way sites track and block accounts.

(2) A dynamic VPN IP address may offer slightly more flexibility than a static VPN IP address. However, in terms of security, the difference is negligible unless the VPN server forwards inbound traffic to you as well.

(3) A Chicago data center VPN IP address assigned exclusively to you will probably look a little cleaner than a shared Chicago data center VPN IP address. There are services that supposedly offer proxy servers with residential IP addresses; issues are inevitably (a) increased cost, (b) decreased availability/stability, (c) decreased bandwidth, and (d) whether these proxy servers were legally obtained or not.

Frankly, there really isn't a publicly available VPN service that I have actually used that I can recommend with the expectation that it will meet your needs and potential contingencies flawlessly. If being banned by Facebook/Google is your number one concern, you will need to look into getting access to proxy servers with residential IP addresses.

This is far from absolute, but you won't necessarily need a new IP address if Facebook/Google knows that your IP address belongs to a popular VPN service with thousands of users. You'll just have to jump through more hoops (i.e. capthchas) to setup the account, and the account will always be viewed with more suspicion because of its IP address or subnet.

I can give you a general idea of how sites leverage IP addresses to identify or assess suspicious accounts. However, different sites employ different security measures, so there's really no telling what will happen until you try it. So it's time for a "baptism by fire."
