Proper Content Writing for An Authority Site

I was under the impression that google said they ignore alt text? or is that only when the image is linked?

About the category design, there is so much more you can do, even with Wordpress. Especially if you plan to rank them.
I take several hours when I design a new website in order to get some very nice Categories page.

I think the description on this page can be very important, mine are over 1k words, but I'll use tabs, toggle and such shortcodes in order to display them nicely. I use CategoryTinyMCE Plugin, which works great for that. Then you obviously need to tweak some things on your archive.php page, but I'm a shitty coder and everybody can do that.

Firstly, it'll help for SEO, and secondly you can give your readers good information about your topic.
For example if it's a Review Category, I'll add before the post loop a section with lot of details about how to choose the products and such.

Here's an example (obviously I have to blur almost everything out, but you can see how it's displayed) :
Header
Menu
Category Title ("Category Name")
Category Description (3 tabs with images and toggles)
Category Second Title ("Category Name Review")
Articles List / Sidebars

You mention that your category pages are not usually seen by visitors, which leads me to believe you have other pages that users use to navigate to the posts. Having the excerpt on both pages would probably be duplicate content?

I don't use an exerpt, I have an actual article on it. The reason it is not usually seen by visitors is that they rarely go to a category page, just an article about the specific target they are searching. The content on the category page is 100% unique so there is no issue as to duplicate content.

The category pages almost always rank though and so I do get traffic to them.

So on your category pages - do you still have the links to the categories posts, and display these posts excerpts? Or do you display their excerpts on the pages that the users use for navigation? (or are they on neither page).

No links at all on the category page that are inside the content. The sidebar/menus will link to other pages on the site of course but nothing in the content at all because I make it very general.

Perfect, understood. I was on the same page with the description - but was not sure if you combined the article on the cat page with links and excerpts.

Thanks for the guide. I really needed a detailed perspective on this subject.

Sorry for digging up an old thread Greg, but this is an amazing thread.

More people should see, and appreciate the value of this!

Do you use any specific plugin to customize the categories? I found Custom Category Pages, but was not updated long time ago.

No, I do not, that is manual as I've never come across a category plugin that seems to do the trick.

nice article and very informative.

is there a way we can rank an image without above parameters ?

I have seen images ranking not related to the keywords and from websites where these keywords were not present
in text image name alt tag.

how is it possible?
is it due to backlinks? and only backlinks?

If you have seen it then it must be possible... I would not be surprised if it was backlink related but I am rather surprised there was not even an LSI KW attached to the image itself somehow.

I've never tried it nor have I noticed it so I can't answer that with any historical background.
