How "far" to go with unfollowing?

At the moment, I have 2 accounts at ~1:1 followers/following ratio.
The third one is in the process of getting there too.
I never bothered unfollowing this much before, but got converted after reading that Pinterest does manual checks from time to time so it's better to be closer to 1:1 and "safe".
Is there any merit/benefit to going 2:1, 3:1 or even deeper?

So ratio bigger than 1:1 (1:1.2,1:1.3,etc) is just fine.

When the ratio becomes big (1:3) it means that you are trying to get more followers. If the numbers are low (30:100) you are fine because it seems like something which can be done manually and not by bot.
When it becomes 2000:6000 it seems automated, because it's hard to get to 6000 followers by adding them manually (if you get 6000 per year, it means that you follow 16 people per day, which is lots of work for someone who this isn't his day-job..).

When you automate things, try to think what is the manual way, and then try to figure if you are crossing the limits.

Follow this only if you want to be on the safe side. If you don't - then just follow gazillions of users and you will probably earn quick cash, but also get banned quickly, the decision is in your hands!

I see you didn't quite understand me. What I asked is the followers/following ratio, not following/followers

Yeah, Pinterest manually checks about these activities. You should not go for a bulk unfollowing in a same day.

If Pinterest is anything like Twitter, you can unfollow a lot safely in a day, but the key is to not follow anyone during that time period. A big flag to them is constant follow/unfollowing. On Twitter you can unfollow 10k a day and be fine if you want.

Yep, that's why I do the mass unfollowing only 1-3 times ever per account. It minimizes the "follow/unfollow/follow again" and keeps the accounts safer. The only question here is whether there's any benefit to unfollow so many profiles to the point of your number of followers being higher than the number of profiles you follow. I've read somewhere that might increase the reach of your pins (% of your followers that see your pins on their newsfeed, near the top, or something along those Fac e book-ish lines...), thus providing more exposure, traffic, repins etc...

This might be nothing but on the home feeds of my accounts, the pins I'm seeing, aside from Related Pins, are those from pinners who are following less than 500 or so accounts. Unlike Related Pins, these pin are relatively fresh in a sense that when I look at the timestamp, it says a few hours to 1 day ago, most have 0 repins/likes. And these pinners do not have a lot of followers either, usually less than 100. My initial reaction to this is that low counts of following can get pins to show up in homefeeds, not necessarily high followers:following ratio.

What I don't see are pins from pinners in the News tab who just followed a ton of users (300-4000).

I think that will get you account suspended quickly. They block you (the "slow down" warning) when you unfollow 1 by 1 too quickly. I can't imagine unfollowing 1000 at the same moment.

I believe ~5% followback is the minimum (eg., 10 followers, 200 following). So, when you try to follow 201st profile, you get blocked. At least that's what happened to me when I started a new batch of accounts about a month ago, I hit a few of those blocks, as soon as I unfollowed some, I could continue following others.
