What's the best way to do SEO without getting hit?

From previous experiences and just by looking around it seems like link building whether done white hat or black hat still damages your site on every new G algorithm roll out. Now maybe I am wrong but if I am please tell me the best way you have been following to build your backlinks without getting hit.

I have done my research and talked to SEO firms but at this point I trust none so I would like someone from their own personal experience to share a piece here.

So far 2 people from my team are doing manual back linking to websites with high trust flow but this is very time consuming. Do you think this is the right way to go and one shouldn't be using services like SEOlutions or using them is fine as long as we do it in a specific way?

Please do share would LOVE to hear your insights on this.

Unless you REALLY know what you're doing or can afford for Google take hit one of your money sites I wouldn't use black hat. White hat SEO works a treat if you do it the right way.

When I first started with SEO I used to look at the backlink profiles of bigger competitors and freak out at the number they had and the amount of work and articles I'd have to write to match it.

But the good news is you don't need 1,000s of backlinks to rank well in Google, just well optimised pages and a handful of good, manually built backlinks.

None of my sites have ever been hit and actually improve their SERP ranks with each new rollout from G. Some good directory listings, a steady stream of manually built comment links from niche related websites, do an infographic or two and some guest blogging and you're well on your way.

Best way is to use free buffer sites like youtube, blogger, etc. You build links to the authority buffers which link to you and if they get penalized you can kill the buffer site. You keep all of the links to your money site very clean with mostly naked anchors and business name from sites that aren't your buffers and you should be fine.

You should also block all of the link bots in your htaccess. Places like ahrefs, majestic, etc. That way your competition doesn't see what you're doing.

One of the other things I am a bit scared of is if signature links in various forums that link directly to my brand site might take down my rankings because Google might see it as a huge collection of similar nofollow links - and categorize them as spam. Is it a good idea to NOT link to your main website through the forums you think?

Thank you for the answer and for the strategies. I actually haven't thought of blocking the htaccess but will definitely look into it - should come very handy. Awesome tip there!

My plan is to basically depend more on Forums, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook for traffic and engagement to my website.

As for SEO I am pretty much doing it as correctly and as white hat as possible but with a freedom of outcome so to speak so I am not basing my business on Google because it just doesn't seem stable. On the other hand since I am doing everything manually and white hat I assume that overtime I will rank well and if not then it won't hurt me because I never based my business off that in the first place.

Do you think this type of approach is reasonable?

I am just trying to find some sort of stability in the SEO/Google Search.

To rank in google you must have good onpage seo (quality content without overoptimization) and build contextual links from authority sites with unique content and good metrics. Also have good anchor diversification and build links slowly.

Yoast SEO Premium along with SEOPressor does the trick beautifully. Plus we build the links manually using white hat techniques so should be good on that department!

Here are the facts:

If you do not want your sites whacked then learn to do marketing. You have to learn to produce great info graphics, great articles, great "content", but bigger than that you have to learn to market that content so others link to it and talk about it.

If you are doing anything other than marketing your site to others then you are breaking "google's" spam bait policy.

You will have to define manual link building and lot of other things in order to understand whether or not you know what you are doing or if your team does.

I will offer one tip -

Go Find articles, info graphics, or press releases that performed wonderful for someone in your niche in the past... Then find out why that piece is week or needs updated.... Update it to 10X better than theirs was... Then go through the links emailing them to let them know that the piece was outdated and you had really enjoyed it so you updated it. Where the link is on their site and how they can replace that link with the link to your updated piece.

That would be real "white hat" link building. It is old school marketing.

I wouldn't touch forum footer links. They just scream spam. Feel free to post a link or two in a forum thread though if it's related. Do a search on Google for "your keyword" "forum" and see what comes up.

Try to build an anchor text with just 80% url
7% brand name
5% more info, click here, read more (anchor text)
5% brand name + keyword
and 3% keyword.

When you (and others) refer to 'manual' link building what exactly do you mean?

I guess I understand you are advocating to NOT use submission software of any kind but aside from that what constitutes manual link building?

Buying links?
Creating your own blog network?
Making web 2.0 blogs? (Can these be automated or hand-written)?

Or am I completely missing the mark?

Try to do the best to build your own brand. I am doing much manual work. Blog commenting, natural anchors, quality content, guest posting on quality websites and forum posting.

You can register and post to free directories and link your blog in the article. Do lots of blog commenting and forum posting.

Just to add another tip on this thread is once you do start building lots of links, make sure you diversify your anchor text. I kept getting killed by the first 2 penguin updates over having too much anchor text for my primary keyword.

Saving your website from penalties caused by SEO can be difficult. Vary your anchor text and keep your backlink profile looking as natural as possible. Avoid using duplicate/spun content on tier 1 - should be fine for tier2/tier3.

If you really want to protect your website from future penalties, let the backlinks come naturally by providing valuable content which people will share. Social signals are important. You could built the majority of your links to 301 redirected domains - this way you can disable the 301 redirect in the future if you suspected it was the cause of a penalty.

Use the buffer site as Jericho mentioned above, this the same way i'm using but one additional thing is carefully post to these buffers quality content as your money site or micro-site, then continuously check and monitor the buffer.
When the buffer sites get caught or drop ranking, cut off all links that point from buffer site to your money site. Imagine that these buffers like the switched boxes, when it's good -> turn on, when it's flagged -> turn off.
Another important thing is considerate leveraging brand anchors, think of building your online branding.
