web design legal question!

hey guys,

I'm currently looking for clients to sell SEO services to, and in some cases build their website as well (assuming it's relatively small, local business for example). If I use a wordpress platform and a child theme on their site, for example Genesis + child theme, should I buy Genesis + the child theme for my client every single time? If I use mine that I've bought legitimately, for every client, can I get in trouble?. My initial guess is to buy the platform for every client but I've seen many ads offering basic web site design for dirt cheap and I can't imagine the designer pays for that stuff. any help appreciated!

Most theme vendors have 2 options:

Personal License
Developer License

In this case you'd need the developer one. Themeforest also works with this.

I disagree with this slightly. It would be cheaper to just buy a Personal license for each individual client, as the Developer license often costs a huge amount.

You would need a single license for each client, or a developer license (I think). I have one or two WordPress themes I use frequently (these can be easily customized with built-in features and my own, basic knowledge of html/css). For these few themes I have a developer license. My personal favorite is Omega by Oxygenna. If a client has needs requiring a unique theme I pass the cost (and the license) on to them.

Best way is to contact genesis themselves for details on whether your license would breach their terms of service of you installed it for your clients. If you manage their sites and promote on their behalf, I think you should be safe.
