Where did you learn SEO?

I never set out to learn SEO, I just learnt nearly all of the skills required then one day realised, "holy shit I can rank sites" one of the best things I ever learnt was to build bots and automation. As a single example, at the time my shit girlfriend had a data entry job she was too lazy to do. She worked from home, I got her to teach me the job, then I learnt VB / Excel Macros and windows automation, then did a whole years work in 2 hours.

Then a little while later, ranking sites before there were decent bots I thought of that lazy ass girlfriend and how much she pissed me off, then those skills came back into action.

Pretty much every little thing I use and know was for something else

I started with Moz.

Got a group buy for some paid SEO courses to check them out.

Then started white hat, continued to experiment being slightly over cautious until I felt I had a grasp of the entire spectrum.

Discovered BHW roughly half way through that.

If I'm honest about 5% of BHW is golden, the rest is filler content, but the 5% really makes the difference and helps you figure out some interesting things.

I've actually seen enough of your posts to know that you are not the guy who goes to the land of Testing... you want the answers in black and white, and you know what, most of us do too but that is not how this works.

That is why I wrote that; specifically for you.

You wanted help from me as you stated in a PM, well you won't get much better direction than this.

Honestly, I haven't really tested much because i'm still learning the ins and outs of IM and I apologise if my reply before sounded aggressive, I meant it in a complete non-sarcastic way or anything like that.

I just find it easier to learn if it's simply explained to me rather than reading a billion pages on it, but that's just me (not that I haven't read).

Would you say Moz helped you get a good grasp of SEO and ranking sites? Like right now I feel stuck... I've got 1 churning and burning, 1 i'm adding product reviews/articles to maybe 3-4 times a week (I'm not sure how to rank this site) and a Facebook page I have no clue how to get posts viral.

I've read and read for 2 months, i've even dipped my feet in the water but i'm at a damn crossroad.

I didn't take it as anything at all negative, I was just pointing out to you what I see as a deficiency in your mode to rank sites.

You really need to stop reading and start testing; you say you have read and read for 2 months... that is 1 and a half more months than I read when I started and I seem to be doing OK.

On the other hand, you gave me a good topic to write about today as that has always been a bit of a craw in my side when guys talk about how to rank this or that.

From the various sources on internet. If you spend 90% of your time reading, you are doing it wrong. Spend 90% of your time working on your sites and SEO and you will win.

If you get hit by Penguin, that's OK and this is something you can learn from. First hand experience beats any theory published on a forum or blog. People who actually bank big money with their SEO techniques, won't reveal them. And if they do, Google will find a way to devalue or penalize them in a matter of months.

Spend 10% of your time reading and learning from online sources. BHW, backlinko and Viperchill are my favorite ones. Especially backlinko is known that many (even most well known) bloggers like to copy his posts and tweak them a little bit.

Take time and read more on forums like BHW, WF and etc. And also you can read blogs from the experts like SEOMOZ and many out there, Hope it helps.

It helped me understand the basics, and apply the basic techniques.

Put it this way, I didn't find blog networks from there, but I learned about outreach.

It depends who you work for and what you are doing, I do in house SEO on various E-commerce sites so it may be a little different to your approach.

Try and copy some of the journeys here with your own twists and learn from the process.

I guess this goes to show sometimes it's best to be thrown into the deep end hey?
Like when I went for my first driving lesson I was really bad, because we went backstreets and did basically nothing.

Then on my second ever (except a new instructor), he threw me straight onto the road, I was shitting myself but I gained confidence real quick and now I consider myself to be a decent drive 3-4 years later
