Well I orginally wrote up this article on my blog to help out fellow SEO's but the visibility/views hasn't been that great so instead of letting the post go to waste I want to help out some of you guys who are currently panicking.
As you probably figured out from the title of this post, Penguin 3.0 has arrived. As with most Penguin updates, it has already caused a lot of talk on various forum threads, such as here. In this post, I'll go into a bit more detail about Penguin 3.0, and why I have a love/hate relationship with most Penguin updates.
So it?s pretty much confirmed. When a big update like this happens the forums are usually full of chaos, confusion, anger and despair. Typically, the folks panicking are new to the whole SEO scene. There is a nice new group of noobies who enter the game every year.
I?ve only read about 2-3 different threads on Blackhatworld and I can already see the damage Google has done. This isn?t the first time either. It?s tragically an annual event. The amusing part of this all is the methods that have got us all penalised will work again for another year until they roll out another update. It?s a silly cat and mouse game that Google can never win.
So let?s discuss why I have such a strong love/hate connection with these farm animal updates and why you should too. I?ll start off with the bad and finish with the good.
The Bad:
Well understandably, anyone who relied on your website(s) to provide an income for your family is literally out of luck. There is no turning back. No apologies or begging will help your case. Man up and let that little baby die. Let this be a lesson to not leave all your eggs in one basket.
Don?t worry though; I?ll guide you to the quickest bounce back possible. There is NO POINT of trying to send in a reconsideration request. Even if you remove/disavow all the bad links and get reconsidered the site will take months and months to recover.
We?ve already done tests with this theory and it seems sites that have been approved for reconsideration are still ?flagged? and never return back to their original top spots. It?s much easier and quicker to just repeat your tactics on a new domain. Copy the entire site and reuse it. Just make sure to take down the old site. As silly as that sounds it?s the truth. I have been doing this for years and I ALWAYS recommend that to my clients.
The Good:
I?m sure you?ve heard of survival of the fittest? Well, take this philosophy and apply it to the SEO world. People who do not prepare or do not think forward put themselves into tight situations. As bad as this sounds, we must take advantage of others faults. Hundreds of fellow entrepreneurs are forced to leave the industry and get a regular 9-5 job just to pay the bills.
How is that good for us? The competition drops significantly across all niches and the barrier of entry just becomes even higher. The less people to fight over the SERP?s the better!
Some of you may be thinking this is easier said than done. How can I survive getting hit every year? I need constant cash flow. But that?s where many people make the biggest mistake. You should never be relying solely on organic traffic.
There are tons of other ways to get visitors to your site. But that is a whole other topic on its own. The lesson of this whole post is that you can?t let Google be in control of your future. If you do you simply WON?T survive. I have other means of income when ?shit hits the fan?.
So when I hear about another big Google update I don?t get all worried anymore. I realize its just part of the game and it can actually benefit those who are prepared.
