Just a General Question for Anyone with Marketing Experience with Twitter

So over the past 8 months I made a twitter account and using various methods of my own and also some found on here, I've accumulated around 20,000 followers. I suspect 16,000-18,000 of these followers are real. Up til now I only tweet about my niche and get a fairly active response, however I have never tried making money off of it. Is there a way to start making money off this account as of right now? If not, when would a twitter account be a viable source of money (aka how many followers)? Anyone who's had experience with making money through twitter, I would greatly appreciate your insight.

Thanks for the link, definitely a helpful contribution. But this leads me to another question. I have a unique niche, one that I will probably turn into a more generalized one over time like the ones mentioned in the article. What sort of website should I be directing my traffic to? Obviously it should be geared toward your niche but when your niche is something like "History in Pictures", what sort of website would you want to make that would be parallel with your twitter account?
