How to learn to IM a blog?

I'm a web designer that is completely new to SEO and IM. How do I SEO/IM a blog? I'm all for ease of use but as a web designer should I use wordpress? (most tutorials use these). How do you choose what type of niche you would blog about? Have drawn some of my own conclusions but I don't know if they're accurate. Like choose hobbies in local searches like san diego calligraphy lessons. I feel that it would be easy to rank in such a search. What is your advice.

Yeah but my question is how would people find the blog? Or in other words get ranked in page 1 in a search engine or any other ways you guys get traffic?
