Using expiring domains do build backlinks.

Hi all,

My understanding is that if you forward a website to your new one the backlinking benefits are forwarded on.

If a website with a good PR score is set to expire and I manage to acquire and forward it to my existing site - is there going to be a solid benefit to my PR and SEO as a result?
I figure if the effect is negative it would be easy enough to rewind.

Thoughts?

Using contextual links is much more beneficial than just forwarding a domain. So making the site look real, putting your link to your moneysite with a related article, etc. Congratulations, you just discovered PBN (private blog network). Lots of researching to do, now.

I understand the contextual element. I would only be using domains from the same niche industry.
As an example if I ran a gocarting business in Australia (not the case) and I forwarded an expired domain from a gocarting place in the USA with strong backlinking and domain age would that up my PR?

I prefer contexual links instead of 301, the reason being the anchor text and links would be geared towards that particular brand and doing 301 redirect to another brand will look fishy in google's eyes, even though there is no specific penalty for this right now. Also, 301 redirect can be easily targeted in any future update.

This, better be safe than sorry.
301 works, but when a website get a lot of 301 redirects, it will raise some flags.

Hi Sir Tinny,

If you buy an old, expired domain and 301 redirect it to your money site, one of the problems is that whilst your rank will improve (Hopefully) it will be for the niche that the expired domain originally targeted:

Example

Money Site = New and used Caravans

Expired domain = Used Cars

Once you 301 that expired domain across the following will happen.

Expired domain = No Rank

Money Site = No increase in rank for "New & Used Caravans" - Increase in rank for "Used Cars"

Hope that makes sense, if you're looking to use expired domains to boost your rank, it's far better to build a small PBN (Private Blog Network) and "Convert" the link juice from "Used Cars" to "Caravans" by using the proper anchor text and writing a decent article on the out-linking page.

It's best to create a website on it and use it as PBN.

I will suggest you to recover site from way back machine and add contextual link to your main site

Thanks all - some great feedback. Looking at the PBN side of things. Might be a good option.

As far as

Example

Expired domain = Used Cars

All I would be looking at is identical businesses to mine in different locations that drop a domain for whatever reason.

use expiring domain as buffer site, use your brand or naked url on this buffer site and build another backlinks to this buffer site using your keywords, that will work perfectly.
