Good case study, Speaking from personal experience, Instead of Expired domains, "Expiring domains" would have had a ,much better results.

Also, you will need to build links to money site, along with your 301s.

If you chose good domains, 301s will pass Authority & Trust to your site, however, you Still need backlinks to tell google what the site should rank for.

Yeah that's why I was wondering if I should maybe build other links.

Anyways, there's no way to know unless it's tested. If it's not ranking then I'll just build some links after the 2nd 301.

I have tested it many times, and with quite a few more than six 301's, without a doubt you need more than 301's. If you ever took a look of the link profiles of the major churn and burns you will notice they use masses of 301's, yet they still use masses of spam too.

I would've liked to try that, but it would have been too expensive trying to bid for good expiring domains. Also the links from my expired domains are better, cheaper and related to the keyword I'm trying to rank.

You're probably right, but right now my budget doesn't allow me to invest in more domains.

By the way, did you host your expired domains then 301 them or did you 301 them directly?

Both, I would normally at the very least for something basic use five hosted and five direct. You do not really need any more money to invest, just make very high quality web2 blogs and niche comments and niche profiles.

Here is a little tip, I would join niche forums and become "active", I would ask a long question relating to my target keyword, something which I know will get attention, once the thread dies out after a month, I edit the thread with a backlink to my site.

Just looked at my ranking stats not expecting anything but it looks like I'm ranking position 107 without any links. (Keep in mind that this is an exact match domain with a few letters added on the end)

I'm expecting it to drop to n/a but this looks promising and gives me hope that I'll see results once I've sent a few 301s.

Yep, I'm going to wait 15 days before I do the first 301. Need to wait for the spam links to send to the 301 sites first.

Screw it, I don't have the patience to wait and I don't know if I got hit by Penguin.

I'm going to do one 301 tonight (with strong links) to the money site and see what happens.

3 days after the 301, I'm already ranking for a number of terms.



I'm now going to start building basic links like social bookmarks and nofollow comment links. Nothing powerful.

I'm really not sure when this have changed along the road, but when I was starting, nobody would call this 'ranking'. You are freaking 137 (and #31 for tiny keyword with 590 monthly), sorry but that's nothing. And this is not only for you, I see it's quite typical around here lately.

And don't get me wrong, this case study is interesting and great that you are doing one. Just disagree with the 'ranking' part. Keep going and let's hope you'll see 'real rankings' too!

But a tiny keyword with 590 monthly visitors with a CPC of $18 is definitely something worth ranking for.

And the reason why I showed my results was not to say 'oooh I'm ranking 137 and I'm going to be rich' but to say '3 days after I had done the 301, it's showing some results even after the Penguin update'.

This is a case study and I'll continue to update regularly (even if the results are negative) so that both me and the people interested can have something to take away from.

Yes, it might be worth ranking - if by ranking we are talking about TOP3 - anything else would be waste of time and effort in my opinion.

Sure, I know you didn't mean it like that and I guess my point really was that moving a site from #xxx to #1xx is different than moving a site from #xx to Top 10.
