Multiple .edu domain users have blogs that you can post or comment in with a do-follow link, just make sure it is relevant, not 'Bigger penis just one step away: www ilovebigdicks.com ' on a blog post about feminism.
Edit: Oh God, it is an actual website and I just accidentally linked to it. Didn't spend too much time on the site though. *Cough* And Fixed.

1. Create a scholarship that has to do with your niche. E-mail the scholarship office of every university and tell them about your new scholarship. Ask to be linked on their scholarship page.
2. Many Alumni can still host blogs on their respective University's .edu domain. Ask your smart buddies if you can use their .edu blog.
3. E-mail professors within your niche and asked to be linked in the resources section of their .edu blog/profile.

Is there any data to back this statement up? Even if the ranking benefit has minimized over the years....a few edu and gov links have other benefits..... helping to pass a manual review is one of them.

These are well aged, good trust and authority sites which is good to gain authority from Google. Most of these sites are allow us to write comments with linkback to our site. So all you need to do is post your link with insightful comments.
