There are many ways you can improve your visitor count and there for your search engine position.

1- use SEO
Add new content and make sure that it is unique.
Write reviews on websites that user search for a lot like Alexa or parts of websites like how google works ect.

2- Social networks

are all good.

3- Traffic exchanges
You can use traffic exchanges out there that will send you free traffic that will help you increase your rankings. I havent used many but the one i am using at the moment is FastAlexaRank, its main use is for Alexa rank but the way it works is by sending you traffic (which is what you asked for ).

4- Use forums
You can post in forums and ask people to review your site or ask them to give their opinions, a lot people will visit your site giving you traffic and maybe some good pointers.

These are just some ways but there are many out there, i use these for my ranking and hosting site and both get many visitors.
