'Pinning' a Tweet - does it help grow followers?

Never actually tried this, but thought I'd ask if anybody has experience of testing this - if you Pin a popular tweet have you found this increases your new follower rate, as that's the first thing they see?

You get more traffic but not more followers?

Surely one follows the other? If you're getting more traffic (people seeing your Twitter account due to more retweets), then that in turn will likely result in more people following?

You can only "pin" your own tweet and not others so the people seeing your pinned tweet would following you already.

Yeah, we know all that, but people who see one of my tweets for the first time might go to my account; see the pinned tweet and retweet it - therefore then expanding the reach of that pinned tweet, resulting in more followers.

In other words, if the pinned tweet is a popular tweet does it get Retweeted a lot more than if it wasn't pinned, and therefore attracts more people.

if you can pin a popular and appealing tweet that is specific to your niche then you will get lots of retweets and people will follow you back in a greater number as your tweet

It works.

If you leave a tweet pinned long enough at the top of your timeline, it gains momentum, gathers engagement (likes, RTs) and when a tweet has a few likes and RTs, others will start doing the same to it, so practically the snowball effect kicks in. Just make sure, that it's a worthy, preferably image tweet with an url in the text accompanied with 2-3 relevant hashtags, so you can gain the most out of it.

People like/RT pinned tweets more often just because it's the first thing they see, when they check your timeline. And yes, if a tweet has some kind of engagement, there's a higher chance that it will get more than if it wouldn't have any.

You can do your own experiment, if you wish, even without pinning. If you have a few tweets already, stop tweeting for a while. In the vast majority of cases you can notice that the engagement will decrease further down on your timeline, the further you go, the less engagement your tweets will get. The tweet which is sitting at the top of your timeline - be it pinned or not - will receive the most engagement from your followers or profile visitors. This cannot be explained with anything else other than its position, simply that's what people see at first, sometimes they don't even go further.

Tweets with more engagement have a higher chance to appear at the top of the timeline of your followers, pinned tweets aren't an exception. So yes, pinning a tweet should help.
