Indexed page not showing on SERP for unique string query

Strange G behavior: a new site, launched a few weeks ago, is gradually being indexed by G.

The G query:
site:site url
shows dozens of indexed pages.

So far so good, but a specific query for a unique string found in home page text (query:"unique string") shows no results.
Tried various specific queries for unique strings in home page - no results.
Have been checking daily for a few days now.

Any clues what could this be?

Has the homepage actually been indexed? I've seen websites before that had lots of urls indexed but not the homepage.

That does sound quite strange. Has it been properly cached? Is the unique string that you are looking for in some sort of code like JS or have you worked with code that tells google to only index this and that part of your website and ignore some other part? If yes maybe there is some mistake in the code there? If not I would have no clue...

All the unique strings I have queried are just parts of normal sentences displayed in plain html for all to see.
No cloaking or any other funny business on this site.
Other indexed pages also do not display unique strings in specific query.

Maybe it's overoptimized and that's why it's nor ranking anywhere.

Actually, its not the ranking that boggles me - its the fact that for my unique query string there are zero results.
its not that other websites outrank me, there are no serp results at all for these unique string...

Its always a possibility, however it is a kosher site and I have not given it any links, so I doubt it.

Perhaps what you are searching for doesn't exist on your website.

Well, I know for fact that site: query doesn't give accurate results (gives different results than other google tools and queries), but it always gives a good indication as to whether the site is deindexed.

are there separate articles on the front page and you can find the other articles in google but you cant find text from this particular article?

This can happen if for same query other website rank high and you are way under the pages. I have a social media website which has 200+ visitors from Google as some keywords were on #1 page but for its own name it was ranking on #112.

I can't find any unique string from any page at all, although these pages are indicated as indexed by G site: query

All the pages are properly cached.
