I was wondering how you guys are structuring your silo websites?

I've only just started to dabble.

I pretty much use Wordpress only. I realise it is not optimal for a 'traditional silo formula' but I was wondering how you are structuring your stuff?

I can't seem to get my head around the idea of having a category, a page name and supporting posts to the page despite reading and watching some of the wpzoom videos.

Is this understanding correct:

1. create standard category names in wordpress (these will normally be the main menu options on the home page).
- Question: So when people click on these main links... what page are they taken to? a generic page about the keyword?

2. Create pages that will serve as the main silo pages for each of the keywords.
- This part seems fine to me.

3. Create posts that link to the silo page.
- This part seems okay as well.

This is where It all falls apart for me:

- should the home page be a static page? Is that even normal that people still use just a boring static page?
- should the main menu links be linking to a generic page? and if so... should that generic page link to the silo pages? or should the silo pages link directly to the main menu category links?
- how do you get around your permalinks all sounding so similar considering they are based on similar keywords? do you do this? or do you use generic keywords to split it up?

I realise this is a long post and some of it probably makes me sound like I'm on crack... but any help and guidance would be appreciated.

As I do this silo I am seriously starting to question if the benefits are there in 2014 considering how sophisticated the algorithm has evolved.

The homepage has to be a static page if you want to use a silo structure. By the way, I don't silo my site because I don't believe in silos. I create my categories the way I want my sites organised.

WP is a nightmare when you want to create a good (perfect) silo structure. HTML is a way to go.

It's a nightmare for the plugin coder, but not for somebody who simply buys a WordPress silo plugin

HTML site-builder softwares are also a nightmare - they join all the pages together through the navigation system

I suspect you're advocating no-menu HTML sites such as Wikipedia, which use in-text hyperlinks to link to other pages?
