Dropbox Just Grew Up and Got Real

So I was minding my own business (as I like to do) and up pops a notification from DropBox saying they were upgrading their service and I now have 1000GB's of storage along with some other stuff to make my DB life better......

To be honest I thought it was a joke. I mean, for my $9.99 monthly payment I had gone from having 100Gb of storage to 1,000Gb - that's pretty generous really (well I think so). But then when I dived in to things further there's a host of other additions that are very welcome.

• Date Sensitive Expiring Links
• Shared Folders That Are Read Only
• Remote Wipe <- I really like this one as it's similar to the offering from Apple. If you lose your device that's connected to DB you can remote wipe it and disconnect it from your account.

I'm happy to pay $10 per month for DB but I will now switch to annual billing to save a few $$ as I think all of the new toys and extra storage make it a worthwhile investment.

Based on the above how does DB compare to what you're using? I'd like to hear what you're using that's comparable to DB and why you use that instead. Or maybe you don't use a service like DB. Would the new offerings tempt you to start?

Interesting, this post gave me a few ideas and makes me want to consider such a solution.

Though as someone worried about privacy violation, not sure what service I can trust.

I have always used DB and I love it. These new upgrades are pretty righteous as well! Right on DB way to step it up!

Just used their free plan previously, don't have a requirement for the Pro plan yet but looks like good value.

Yeah, I currently use mediafire, mega and copy mainly.

I use DropBox as my backup location for some of my WordPress sites (BackupBuddy does a daily backup of my files and databases and it sends them to DropBox automatically).

I'm considering signing up with CrashPlan. It backs up your entire computer (ALL your files) online. It offers unlimited online backup. It also retains all previous versions of all your files, including your deleted files (unless you configure it not to). You basically have access to all the files you ever had. The price is like $5/mo. It looks too good to be true, but they have loads of legit reviews.

I can see a lot of paid storage sites going away after this.

I've always used Backup Buddy and set it to send the back up to DropBox and now I feel that the files are more secure in DB. Being able to send backups to DB automatically is a great option in Backup Buddy because, as I found out the hard way, having backups of your WP site is great but storing them on your web hosting and then having the web hosting go tits up is painful indeed.

It's like falling out of an airplane, realizing that you have a parachute only to then find out it's got a massive hole in it.

dropbox is cool but I would rather go with Mega and a couple other providers before them due to the NSA leaks.

I wonder if they did this in order to keep people from dropping the whole cloud storage idea after all the leaks.
