Hi !

I'm thinking about moving to Bali and I'm trying to get some info regarding internet speed, stability and prices but didn't get much luck using G for recent updates.
Found some 2010,2011 and some for 2013 posts but only the "you can easily get internet" but none about speed, stability and prices for someone working on IM that will do some usage, like accessing VPS where a stable connection is needed.

What about more remote places like South Kuta ? And other islands like Lombok and Nusa Penida ?

Thanks

P.S. Didn't really know where to place the thread

All I could find was an average internetspeed for Indonesia; 1.6 Mbit/s
I would proBali find that a disappointing experience.
Ok that pun was terrible I apologise.

How is a good connection needed when using a dedicated server or vps abroad?

I figure you should look online and google the telecom providers in Bali and such for their speeds.

Just google for the broadband or internet providers and call them to ask for their internet speeds.

What a great, great pun. Made me laugh for a solid 5 seconds

I am not from Indonesia but, after a quick google search, I found this: net-zap.com It looks like the highest speed they offer is 2.2 Mb/s ...not very attractive :)

500KB/s for my vps needs are more than enough

Riight, because usually Telecom Providers are really honest with their speed rates . I've been living abroad for some time to know that , specially when it's 3G, internet providers never tell you the average speed ..instead they say "up to xxx" and in most of the cases, are not stable at all.

So that's why I've searched users opinions in G but I didn't find any update and very informative info about it.
I was hoping that some others IM have been there and they could share their experience

Where ? in South Kuta ? Lombok ? Nusa Penida ?

Does it really work 2.2 Mb/s ?

The Tropical MBA guys have done quite a few pieces on Bali - this one probably summarizes everything best.

Come to Malaysia dude. Neighbor of indonesia with better infrastructure ;)

The internet is slow, but don't forget that indonesia is not usa , it's a different place

I'm from Bali, the connection here is generally similar to other place in Indonesia. Really slow if compared to big country like the US.
Try searching internet connection rank around the world and you will find Indonesia among the lowest. Good internet speed in Indonesia is only available for big companies and organizations.

But there's a startup community in Ubud. If you're building a startup and want to work outside US, Bali might be a good place. Here's an article explaining why Bali is a good place for startup http://www.techinasia.com/tech-startup-ecosystem-paradise/

I don't recommend Nusa Penida and Lombok. Not only the internet, the infrastructure and the community are much worse than Bali.

Here's my speed test:

I'm using one of the most popular internet provider in Indonesia. Monthly price is about $50-$60 with this speed. There are more internet provider with lower price and lower speed , from $10-$20 for 1Mbps

The site I found didn't mention a price and I'm not from there, sorry.
Looks like BHW member Lasaint is the best source of info since he's actually from Bali :)

I had been to Malaysia and worked there for about an year. Perfect place for IM. But I don't know much about visa. Since I was on employment pass that time.
But as you said, The infrastructure is much better in not so developed areas too.

Atleast with a dongle and 3g connection you can keep going with good speed.

duplicate post ... sorry

Thanks man :) That's not bad at all. Is it stable or it has a lot of breaks ?

Very good article ! Yeah I imagined that about Nusa Penida and Lombok. But in case I go there for a month surfing, just to know if I could manage any part of my work.

I've been once for a shot time and must say that I really loved the 2 places I've been, and the people I've met. Very friendly, very relax where there's no such thing as violence. Always nice memories come to my head :)

Bali for some reasons but specially for the amazing diversity of waves for practising bodyboard and surf :)

I lived in a Villa in Bali and the Wi-Fi speed was about 1 mbps which wasn't too slow for basic web browsing. But I also noticed that it was a bit unstable at times.
