Safe unfollow amount for 2 year old account?

1k is pretty high. However, if your 2 year old account can handle that already, then try 1200.

Apparently, there isn't limit. Apparently!
I do it with all my Twitter accounts and one of them can't follow new users since two or three weeks ago! I have four or five accounts with 10K+ followers and it happened with most recent of them.
I'm used to mass follow daily and unfollow all unfollowers+inactive when it's full (around 6K). Well... I keep doing it in other Twitter accounts - I don't have another tactic to replace it. :-(

I think if you only unfollow those who aren't following you, Twitter might flag you. Not 100% sure if it's the case, but that's what always happened with me.

2 year old Twitter account? Have at it boss. I have a 2 year old account that I've been following and unfollowing 2,000+ every other day using Tweepi for the past year now. I get about 300 - 400 new followers each day with no negative effects or bans on the account.

They is no limit too un-following amounts even twitter's official website confirmed this, I regularly un-follow 5,000 per day , My biggest one was 60,000 in under one hour and i had no problems afterwords

Did it let you keep following people after that? Usually my account don't let me follow for a few days after i do something like that.

Its on twitter help section, & Yes no problem at all, i can follow and unfollow everyday with no problems, i can follow 2k per day, if i space it out correctly over a 24 hour period, i never fail too follow 1,500 per day
