Can a site know what computer I use???

Okay this has me baffled. I use a particular social site (not myspace, fb etc) for some minor earnings. I tried to log in to my already established accounts the other day and could not get in. These were all created using my desktop pc. Some of these were created using proxies, some were not.

I opened up tor and tried again. Could not get in. I tried ghostsurf and could not get in. I went to netzero dial up and could not get in.
Wanting to see what was up, I then tried to create a new account using all of the above methods and everytime I entered captcha and hit submit, the site would say, "Cannot create your account at this time".

This was all done on my desktop pc.
I scratched my head (I usually scratch my balls but that's another story) and opened up my laptop.
Using my own ip, I was able to create new accounts but still cannot get into my old ones.

WTF??

Other than your ip which clearly has no bearing here, is there any other kind of footprint that my desktop would have left that tells the site not to let that particular computer in? This is weird.

Right. The cookies I know obviously. OS, well it's all windows xp here. Clipboard, plugins, HDID?? Wow. I'm so uneducated on most of this stuff.

Okay, so the next obvious question would be: Can I somehow hide all of the above? I have no problem just using my laptop but for educational purposes I'd be interested.

You can block all scripts etc.. Just depends really on how the sites tracking, lots of different ways. And firefox is more secure than IE, IE can give away too much.

Apart from creating a hash of info related to the hardware configuration inside your PC, similar to those with PC Gaming licenses, wouldn't running CCleaner get rid of all those tracks?

It finds and cleans all kinds of crap. Set it up to secure-delete everything when you run it. 1x is fine, but for my own personal security I prefer 3x (DoD standards). You may also have to untick the box to "only remove temp files older than 48 hours" to truly clean it good.

theres also the mac address, which could have been used.

its kinda rare for sites to use anything besides IP and ISP information from what i know though :S

dont panic they cant know your hdid mac address and such thing unless u install their client that can send them this parameters.
from loging to site they usually get os,ip,resolution,they can grab your clipboard and install cookies but usually use cookies and ips
