Tier 1 Domains - Private Registration

Hi guys, I am quiet new to SEO and have been busy reading in lots of areas on this forum.
I have tried my best to track down the answer to this question, but just can not find it (I am sure it is somewhere).

My understanding is that in some of you lovely guys use their own Tier 1 network with their own domains to build up a high PR list of domains. My guess would be that it would not be a good idea to have your name on the who.is record for each one as that would be quiet transparent, right?

So I was wondering is paying for the privacy part just part of the running cost or is there a way to reduce or remove that cost?

Am really sorry if this is a silly question.
I am also happy to read up or try to find out myself, but a little pointer would be much appreciated.

There is no way to avoid the cost. All your high PR domains have to be registered with WHOIS privacy and hosted on different class C IPs.

The name is not always the biggest issue... The main issue is that you look up a quick whois report on someone... You find their entire network...

What happens if you're in a huge niche with a 100 site network... I'll tell you - IF I find you, your network may or may not go in the disavow tool...


So as a fair warning - tying a name to something... Use a fake name, apply privacy and keep your networks out of the wondering eyes of competitors.

I completely and totally disagree with this. I cannot stress enough how much this is not backed up by real evidence.

They don't see it. Your registrar puts their information in the place of yours. That's what every other registrar can see.
