I plan on manually building some links to start out. I have a feeling that I will need to purchase some sort of SEO package here at BHW in order to see some definitive SERP rank increases. I haven't done any proper research of any services here yet, so I can't really help you there. I'd say just look around for whoever gives the most bang for your buck, and pay attention to customer reviews. Good luck with your site!

Within the past few days, I've feeling a little bit overwhelmed. That's okay, though. I've been trying to do all the research I can since I now plan on writing some/half-ish of my articles myself. I definitely underestimated the amount of work that is required for this sort of project haha. Nonetheless, I have made some progress.
The site theme is permanent, so that's good. I designed a logo for the site using some free vector graphics I found on teh interwebz; soon after, I realized it looked like shit. So I tried again...and failed again. Third time's the charm, I guess, because I whipped a logo up that I deem up to par with the level it should be at.
Content. So far, there are 2.5 pages of content on the site; one of them is the main page article of around 600 words (I decided not to outsource this one). I'm planning on adding onto that article within the next day or so to get it up to ~1000 words. Other than that, I've been slowly pumping out other long tail articles. I ordered two review articles, 1x500 and 1x700, from http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/content-copywriting/620052-epicwrite-com-3-500-words-free-review-copies-if-youre-human.html, so we'll see how that goes. I'm going to try my best to focus and write my own articles, but I'm lazy.
That's about it for now. I'm going to look around for some cheap SEO packages to get this thing off the ground once I have about 15 pages of content up and published.
As always, I'd love to hear your feedback and constructive criticism. This is a learning process for me, so I'd appreciate it.

While I haven't started building backlinks myself, I've done a bit of research and I've come up with a plan that seems like it should work pretty well. I'll be doing it to my own site soon now that I have most of my content online.
I'm going to build my tier 1 entirely by hand. A mix of different Web 2.0 platforms. Build them up over a few weeks with a few articles, images, and embedded youtube videos on each one. Each one will get a few backlinks to my site, spread out over a couple of weeks. Once those have aged for a month or so I'm going to purchase a GSA SER blast from fiverr and point it at the Web 2.0s. There's a couple of sellers who say they'll do tiers 2 and 3 and they've got decently high ratings. I'm not going to recommend anyone because I haven't tested any of their services for myself yet.
Anyway, I figured it'd be about $35 USD to get all the links I need for both tiers and it should be more than enough to get the site started. Depending on how the SERPs look after a few weeks I may do it again, we'll see how things go.
I'm not too worried about google penalizing the site since I'm hand building all of tier 1. Going to try and mix in some wiki links and forum posts as well for diversity but I won't be blasting those.
Like I said, I haven't done this yet because I'm not quite ready (will start building tier 1 next week), but this is how I plan to go about it. I only mention it because a lot of the packages on here are really nice and offer quite a lot of stuff, but I think they're overkill unless you're going for an incredibly competitive keyword.
If you've read WhitePassion's amazon journey at all, he's done hardly any backlinking to his sites and has been consistently making a couple of hundred dollars each month and it's all mostly passive at this point. So, at least for now, I'd hold off from paying for an expensive SEO package.
