Google Adwords Copyright!! Would i be in trouble!

When creating an image/video advert to use for google adwords advertising, do i need to be careful with copyrighted images?

Im using one still image of a character, no more, if i was caught what would happen? could i get sued? I live in the UK

Not sure but may be you will get in trouble for using copyright images. Better use purchased pics.

Yeah, you always need to be careful when using copyrighted images in your campaign, not sure how adwords handles it but when I tried creating an ad campaign on POF with copyrighted images, the manager told me that some of the advertisers got sued because of using an image of a dead person, so I would be careful with that.

Worst that could probably happen is the copyright holder will complain to google who will remove your advert. You may also get a type of cease and desist letter before action (a warning). If the infringement is serious enough google may close your adwords account.

No court in the land would entertain damages in a situation like this unless the litigator followed a certain course. Requesting you immediately cease and desist infringing his copyright would be one of those things required.

The character is well known, and part of a fanbase where anything spreads around quickly, so i'm sure the company could easily find out. I'm using the image as part of the logo of my website without worry as they have been very lenient with websites using their images. However they have not been lenient with people selling things with their copyrighted characters on (for example a fan-made game that was being made with the characters got cease and desisted). So i'm a little unsure whether this they would be ok with or not, i would risk it if i knew that the worst possible outccome wasn't too bad.
