Hello community,

I know BHW is not the best place to ask this, but still looking for suggestions and tips.
Which laptop under $700 (plus or minus $50) would be better for a college freshman intending to do computer science?
I am more used to using PC than Mac, plus at my budget I cannot even think of Mac.

So any laptop or deals or anything that you want to suggest?

Thanks.

there are mini lappy's on the market just google or amazon it, quit handy those things

lenovo i guess, idk the price tho but way cheaper than 600$

Is it just going to be for basic work? Any resource hungry applications to run?

Go for Sony E-series Core-i3 processor , 500 Gb HDD , 2 GB Ram . Will be great for you . Working on similar config lappy right now.

for computer science I would recommend a desktop with two 20"+ monitors. Second hand will be cheaper. And then maybe a mini laptop for classes

No games, but I do need to run those VMWare appliances. And I wish to install both linux and Windows 8 (or 7). I also want to do video editing. And daily life stuffs like web browsing, coding, photoshop, MSOffice, etc.

For video editing work you need to have Video capturing card installed in your system . Avid liquid 7.20 is one of the best software for video editing.

I am an international student so perhaps buying desktop won't be feasible.

Anybody has ideas on the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series and if there are deals or sales to get one of those below $700?

Thanks, to capture videos, I will be using my friend's devices unless I have my own device.
For editing, I have Cyberlink Power Director 11 and Adobe After Effects CC 2014. (torrented both of them)

Then you should look at buying an additional monitor aswell. Coding is 10x easier with dual monitors

I am really being forced by my parents to cut down on budget lol... I secured a full ride and still my allowance sucks. :\

Someday I am going to earn greens from BHW methods and buy all those things I have dreamt of. (the 20" monitor too)
Thankfully computer labs have got large screens monitors to work on. Half the work will be done on them :)

Dell is quite good, been using it at work and home for some years now and never had any problem with it.

Dell Inspiron with 15.6" screen is a powerful replacement for desktop PC.

I recommend Lenovo, i3 cpu (latest technology if possible), 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, onboard video.
