I was just trying to check the backlinks on some of the high ranking videos on my niche and most of them had zero backlinks. I narrowed down the search to (this month) and a video that was number 1 and another one that was number 2 had only 200 views and no backlinks. Other videos has 10k plus views but ranked below. Matter of fact most videos had no backlinks or shares. What gives here?? Is my backlink checker whack or are these people ranking without backlinks or shares.

have you checked social signals? like facebook shares, google + etc. ?
also backlinks are to improve your serps on google, not youtube.
I also wanted to ask...do you usually rank your videos without buying views?do you rely only on backlinks and so on to get organic traffic?

I'll assume you're talking about Google Rankings rather than YouTube rankings and if that's the case then that is weird! Maybe that niche has really low competition so no one bothered to backlink them (which means that you can easily outrank them). Also, as the person above suggested, check their social signals. And check their YT rankings, that might give you an idea...
There are some people on this board that provide good and cheap services for YT views.
If you don't want to spend money on it, check out the youtube 'exchange' sites. Try to get a steady amount of views and let your video's go over the 301+ stadium.
Check your title, tag and descriptions in youtube.
And try to get likes and comments, (also possible on youtube exchange sites)
