I've read that a good way to get Twitter followers is to follow users with high following/followers ratios. The idea is that these users will follow you back.

I wrote a script that scrapes Twitter for user information. Right now, I scraped a few million users and it's still going. I followed 2000 users with high following/follower ratios, but only 300 followed me back (it's been 2 days). I didn't follow users with <500 followers or users following around 2000 people. I don't think I'm doing this right.

If you had a database with every Twitter user and you had to follow 2000 users to maximize your followbacks, which users would you follow?

P.S. I didn't specifically follow users with #teamfollowback in their bios because they tend to be low quality users.

P.P.S. I might make the script available for download in the future, right now it's still a bit buggy.

That's obvious that not all of them will follow you. You got a 1:6 ratio which is not bad at all. Keep following and you'll get even more followers. Good luck.

A twitter user with high follower/following ratio is likely to be an internet marketer, or they are musicians/people who want to become famous by getting followers.

Secondly, if you ever want to tweet something to make money, you will have to compete with the twitter news feed against the number of people your followers are following. If you follow a bunch of people with a low following/follower ratio, it's more likely they'll see your posts in their feed, resulting in higher engagement rates.

Another variable that I hadn't taken into consideration was the last activity date. I followed users who haven't tweeted for years, there's no way they'll follow me back.

well, maybe not with the people you expect followback from, but with your account, i think (fake) hot girl profiles are still working the best and/or if you have interesting content
it's not always the other people people who are at "fault", but it can be your account as well
