Who bailed hay today?

Was I the only Blackhatter who bailed hay today?


As in on a John Deer tractor bailing hay. (i.e turning a field into hay bails that you feed your livestock)


Would like to see how many rural users we have on this here Blackhat.

The last time I baled hay, we used a big square compressor, pitch forks and baling wire.

Fuck farming.

That's exactly why. My dad was an Ironworker and so was I, he could put on a rigging belt with 80 pounds of tools and bolts in it, and climb straight up a steel beam to get on a structure faster than I could run the stairs or climb a ladder, when he was 60.

I have done a lot of hard work in my life, baled hay, pulled that long white train, plowed with a mule, worked as a petrochmical boilermaker, pipe fitter, Ironworker, even a welder, and that old man outworked me on every job we ever worked on together.

We just buy the hay, no time to grow and bale it. Hard to find decent sellers though. It's like Warrior Forum out my neck of the woods. Everyone's trying to sell you sand, damp hay.

Haha I can't imagine. My meat goats have testicles the size of my head and could run through a brick wall if they wanted to, and they usually want to.

I work in a refinery that turns the bales you make into Wheaties.

Sometimes we cut them in half for Mini-Wheats.

We leave them out in the snow for Frosted Mini-Wheats.

I remember my days of bailing hay and stacking it in a hayloft on blistering hot days. Sweating like a pig, dirt, bugs and weeds all sticking to you until you were muddy. Back when we did it we had a pull behind bailer and we stood on a hay wagon behind that, pulling off 50lb bails of hay and stacking them on the wagon in the hot sun. I did that for 4 summers as a teenager. Long enough to know I certainly didn't want to work like that the rest of my life.

I got myself into a College once I graduated HS and I've been learning ever since. The farmer I worked for across the street died the 2nd year I was in College. He was 58 years old and his wife found him in the dairy barn. Farmers today have it a lot easier than back then but it's still hard work. I don't think most would still be here in the USA if the government didn't largely fund their operations. Not to get political but I know local farmers in our area that have been getting paid handsomely by the Government for NOT GROWING crops. They don't have to do a damn thing but own property and collect their checks.

I know someone has to farm but thank God it's not me.

Every summer I go help my dad once in a while bailing hay. John Deere tractor and bailer. I used to alot when I was a kid but since have moved to the city so not so much. Gets pretty boring driving back and forth on a field all day lol.

I concur, I do not have to work that hard to make a living, not anymore.

Although it is tough to make a living at times (hell maybe all of the time) my granparents say they wouldn't have it any other way. Being in my very early 20's and raised a dairy farmer I wouldn't have traded the way I grew up for anything.

Wish that way of life was still possible in today's economy.
