Need Some Guidance on Backlinks Please!

Hello esteemed members!

I do not have a lot of experience with backlinks and I have some questions, if there is anyone who can help I would appreciate it!

1. I have recently bought a domain and recreated the site. The site has a pr8 backlink to an internal page, which I have included in the main menu of the home page. How much of that pr8 juice gets passed on to the home page? Also, in general, how many links on a backlink page will dilute the pr value. The pr8 link in question has approximately 40 links to other sites.

2. I have found myself what look like some good quality expired domains. If I buy them and publish sites on them (not sure if I'll try to rebuild or create a completely new site yet), and then do a bit of backlink work to let G know what the site is about, will it gain a pr value back again, or do I have to wait for the next PR update?

Finally, I know that nobody really knows this shit, but can anyone give me an idea of when the last PR update was, (Dec 2013???) and how many there are in any given 12 month period on average.

If you are using wordpress, try the 404 redirection tool. It brings all 404'd pages to homepage so you keep all of your link juice.
You shouldn't worry about PR. It's all about DA/PA/TF/CF. You are defeating the purpose of buying expired domains if you create links to it. Use the quality BL profile that it already has. Don't risk penalty with new links. I think there was a PR update 6 months ago, not sure though.

1. Use plugin Link Juice Keeper for WP.
2. Quality expired domains don't need links, you have to buy domain for its backlinks.
Last pr update was in December. Nobody knows exactly when the next will be.

Thanks for that. The only reason I have created my own extra backlinks is for anchortext - Google has to know what search term I'm optimised for, right? Otherwise I won't rank for my chosen term. Unless I've got that wrong?

I'm not using Wordpress for this site.

For best result you are better off with one or two OBLs from the high PR site. Again, a PR8 is worth thousands of dollars and not easy to come by, be sure it's authentic and not faked.

1. Why do you care how much gets passed through the homepage? Surely the best place to put a link to your money site would be on the internal page that has the PR8 link? But regardless, a fair bit of that juice will probably flow through if you link to the homepage from that internal page (which presumably you do in the menu). Every link on a page dilutes the PR value, that's kind of (but not exactly) how PR works. 40 is not that many in my opinion for a PR8 page.

2. Forget PR - it's not worth much attention for the most part. If you build out your blog network and you rank your money sites then great. If it doesn't work then either you're doing something wrong or your niche is very competitive. PBNs plain work. PR doesn't pay the bills!

Well, I guess you guys know more than me but my thought process was that I should protect the PR8 link as much as possible by recreating the page it actually links to. If I create a whole new money page it seems to me that there is a chance that the PR8 link would be taken down.

The niche is not competitive, and I'm not using it for a PBN, I'm using it for the money site.

Having read up on this until my eyes are blurred, and having checked out the competition, my conclusion is that the one thing that makes a site rank is high quality backlinks. I don't know of any other way to judge the quality of the backlink other than check out its PR. And indeed, the higher the competition is in the SERPS, the more high PR backlinks they have. For every person who says that Majestic and Opensite scores are important, there's someone else who says they are not, so for me, the jury is out on that one. But in any case my research shows that they are all related to the quality of the backlinks.

So if a domain has expired, the Majestic and Opensite metrics may have decreased as a result, but the one metric that doesn't lie is the backlinks. Well, that's what I have concluded anyway. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's what I'm going with.

So I still have some unanswered questions from the OP, can anyone help please?

Ah, I see, I didn't realise that you were using this domain as you money site itself (it isn't particularly clear in your opening post). I can't say I've had a huge amount of success going down this route but then I mostly use expired domains for a PBN.

So, you probably will need to build some additional backlinks to the site in order to rank because one PR8 link on its own is not going to do the job especially when it is (presumably) completely off topic and has irrelevant anchor text.

Well, that's why I rebuilt the original page - so that the backlink is not only ON topic, but it is linking to an exact copy of the original page - I sucked in the html from archive.org. Admittedly the homepage is going to be completely off topic but I just felt doing it this way had a better chance of preserving the longevity of the link.

Well, that's why I rebuilt the original page - so that the backlink is not only ON topic, but it is linking to an exact copy of the original page - I sucked in the html from archive.org. Well if the domains have only recently dropped then whatever PR they had should still be visible via the toolbar - otherwise you'll have to wait until the next update. But if they are only going to be a part of a PBN then what does it matter?

I guess it only matters from the point of view that if the domain PR is confirmed by G , then I know I'm on the right track. Also if he PR is confirmed by G, I would have the option of making the site a money site instead of just a cog in a PBN.
