I only made about maybe 4 grand in the last 7 months with my job and I completely forgot to file my taxes. Its not enough where the IRS will come and get me though I don't think. Also I have no idea if I can get a extension since its already past due. I don't even know how much I would get back if any. All well.

relax, they're not gonna come kicking in your door. and contrary to popular belief, you have past April 15'th to file. i know a guy who made close 1 million the year before last and still hasn't filed.

If you can't write off the majority of what you owe on that 4 grand then go buy a book and learn...

And it read like you are thinking of foregoing filing your 08 taxes and just "chancing it" You realize that you still file even if you don't have any income right? So once you don't file by skipping a year you are automatically flagged for audit next year and I believe the following 2 years. Maybe someone else can confirm...

Best of luck. Try calling a local tax office and see if they can offer any advise. Pretend you are planning on coming in maybe.

And you are positive his CPA hasn't file an extension for him? Do you think that the state of our national debt the IRS is going to eff around on taxes and the interest that's owed on them?

I find it hard to believe that a 7 figure income earner 1) does not utilize a CPA and 2) would screw around with not filing an extension.

it's common knowledge that the IRS works with people to get them put back in the system of paying taxes, not imprisoning them. he may be faced with penalties, but they're not gonna come kicking in the door to take him to jail.

Correct. I never once stated they would so we both agree on that. :-)

My rebutal to your post was in disagreement to the laxadasical attitude that it's "fine" to file after the 15th as it would be with out recourse as your post implied.

A wise rich man one told me: "Never get the IRS on your ass. Once you get them on it, they'll be on you for life."

Did you get a 1099 or W-2 from from your employer? If so the IRS knows about you and will ask for their cut eventually. In that case you should file as soon as you can. You can use TurboTax on line, and if your case is simple it will only take a few minutes. Then at some point the IRS may send you a letter telling you there is a penalty for filing late, but it won't be very much. If you had tax money withheld and got a W-2 they may even owe you money.

If you were self employed with no 1099 or W-2 forms, I'm not going to tell you not to file, as that would be against the law, but I can tell you that the IRS are not likely to catch up with you.

Where's the law?

lol jk, but yea man they're not going to come for your throat yet, when you have time just go talk to a local CPA and see how they can help you out.
