Just a blog item, but it signals things may massively change in the video field.

If YT went down, what competitor is best poised to replace it? How would your IM biz be impacted?

I wonder if it's even possible for the internet to make money without advertising.. Advertising is expected to fall dramatically in the future so how will any1 that isn't selling something make money online?

YouTube deep in dog doo

Too many users not enough cash

YouTube is about to go down the gurgler according to Benjamin Wayne the CEO of Fliqz.

Writing in his purple prose stacked blog, Wayne said that YouTube, was an "incandescent tower of video Babel; monument to the sloughed-off detritus of our exponentially-exploding digital culture". Wayne described it as a "Technicolor cataract of skateboarding dogs, lip-synching college students, political punditry, and porn".

However he claims that it has reached the zenith of its meteoric rise; and Icarus-like, wings melting; is spiraling back to earth. Murdering the metaphor he added that YouTube was soaring towards the future like a pigeon towards a plate glass window. We guess he didn't realise that pigeons can't soar upwards towards a plate glass window unless it was being towed behind a 747.

Wayne pointed out that YouTube is on track to lose roughly $470 million in 2009 something its overlord Google is not going to be happy about. He said that the economics are hard to overcome and there is no way that YouTube will make enough cash to be sustainable in the long term. The outfit would have to make $9.48 for every video impression shown something which they cannot do.

Wayne added that YouTube's traffic will grow and cost a fortune to run. He thinks that eventually the outfit will have to come up with a subscription.

Youtube will never fail.

They'll just increase the presence of adverts more and more.

People will be pissed off sure but it'll lower the number of impressions which'll lower expenses and at the same time will increase revenue.

They'll just keep increasing advertising until they make a profit.

Ironic, everyone makes money from YT except it's owners :)

The best thing YT could do to cut down costs is to stop embedding of their vids.

The problem is that the Credit Suisse analyst who made the $470M loss projection isn't taking into consideration the massive amount of hardware and infrastructure that is already owned, paid for, and necessary to the operation of Google as it is. Remember that these are projections and not reality and are based on his assertions of the cost of bandwidth and hardware for Google.

If I managed YouTube the first thing I would do is create a tool to search for links in video descriptions and save them all. Then signup to every affiliate and set a task to go through every video and replace it with my own affiliate link :D

Yea that would be Hugh you would make so much money it would not be funny.

YT losing money in the long run . . . bullshit. Do you know what the value of the data they collect on users is worth? Do you know how much this site is accessed?. . . traffic is king! Do you realize that they are yet to properly institute a complete adwords campaign? They are slow rolling this system and messing around with it a bit.

If they wanted to increase revenue there are a million ways to do so with that type of traffic. The blog post is so short sited. . . and its written by the CEO of some pohdunk competition. . . come on. . its like the PM of Tuvalu sending out a press release that China's collapse is immanent.

Take a good look at 'Fliqz'. . .its a f*cking joke. Its charging for what YT does for free. . .and at a huge premium. for $199/mo. . . you can send out 500K streams ... lol . . come on what is that worth? . . and they talk about how YT is just dogs on skateboards, porn, etc. too funny. That is what people are. . idiot! Next the CEO of 'noname book' will declare facebook a bust. Its apparent they didn't get the memo on Web 2.0 and the direction of the web since its inception.

The only thing that will replace YT is something that provides a better user experience, or one who actually pays the uploaders of the video, and deducts the cost of bandwidth streaming, etc.

. . and $9.49 per video impression . . . who conjured up this number Merlin?
