eBook Price Point: 0.99 or 2.99 USD?

Hello,

I've just released my first eBook on Kindle, which targets the Nutrition / Healthy living niche.

The eBook is 10.600 words / 29 A4 pages long, the topic is thoroughly researched (with references and everything), and the writing was done by a US based writer (mid-high priced) because I want to sell quality stuff only.

My free promotion has just ended with over 5000 copies downloaded and with an average rating of 4.6 stars.

Now I'm in a bit of a dilemma how to price the eBook. Should I go with the 0.99 USD (35% royalty) or 2.99 USD (70% royalty) option?

I've noticed that a lot of eBooks that are priced at 0.99 USD are of lower quality (very short, nothing useful, poor grammar, newsletter opt-ins, etc.) while the 2.99 eBooks tend to be better.

I'd be happy to hear how do you guys perceive 0.99 USD / 2.99 USD eBooks and how would you price the eBook?

I suggest you 2.99 USD... if you have good quality, you must have an higer price (in people's mind: low price = pretty low quality)... there is a lot's of poeple who increased their sales just buy increasing their price...

Go for the 0.99 because in this way you can sell more. You can get known by more people and next time, when you release a new ebook, more people are interest in your ebook!

I'll try to leave the price at 0.99 USD for a few days (5 or so) to get some sales ranking and then I'll change the price to 2.99 to see what happens.

IMO, you should price things at a higher level.

Pricing things below $1 is like saying you know the product is crap and you are just looking to sell to those people that scrape the bottom of the bargain bin.

If you put in the work and think it has value then price it accordingly.

I agree. I too would not expect too much from a 0.99 USD eBook, but in the end, I want the price that will make the most monies. I'll leave the 0.99 USD price for a few days now to see how well it sells and then I'll change it to 2.99 USD.

I'll report back how the selling goes.

I'm now selling between 5 and 10 copies per day for 2.99 USD. I'm OK with that I find it acceptable. The ratings are also good, which is crucial in my opinion.

However, if the sales would stop for whatever reason, I would consider making my eBook free. Does anyone have experience with making their eBooks free? What download rates could be expected? Thanks.

The best advice you can get is to read as much as you can see on this subject cause for both alternatives there are 100 pros & cons.
From my perspective if you are 100% sure what you provide is quality, you should go for the higher price. Selling it at 0.99 is a sign of "you can't ask too much from a 1$ book so don't expect too much". People will download your book and it will be one of their 80 1$ books and if you will be #45 on their reading list, you will never get any feedback for him. In case you are interested in getting reviews & feedbacks.

There are people who are just interested in publishing xxx+ books and just get the mass commission. Actually, with the right resources, this can be a very profitable approach.

So it really depends on what do you want in perspective.

There are a ton of studies regarding the whole "expensive is better" factor. But honestly, just look at Apple and you'll see what I mean.

Remember the "most expensive iPhone app" that had no real function and yet people bought it just to have it?

Up the price.

Thanks, guys. I'll stick with 2.99 USD as I believe it's a fair price. So far it has proven to be a better choice - I make less sales, but I make more money.

I have written a LOT of ebooks on Amazon, and I can tell you in every case that I make way more at 0.99c than I did at $2.99.

I know the instinct is to go for a higher price, but they just do not get the sales. I have one book in the gambling niche that at $2.99 made 150 or so sales in a year. I dropped the price to 99c and made more royalties in a month than I did in the previous year at the higher price.

For whatever reason, 99c just gets way more sales. Unless you have a novel written, go for 99c.
