ok, so I read in a couple of posts that the keyword density should be low about 2%ish .

Let me paint you a picture:
I have a 500 word article, the keyword is mentioned 2 times in the article.
The keyword is mentioned in the following places:
1) Title
2) beginning of article
3) End of article
4) URL
5)Meta title
6) meta description

After checking the keyword density , it is now 2.37%

Keep in mind I will not do any offpage SEO to this page.

Is this an acceptable amount or is it over optimized ?

I'm so sick of percentages being used with keyword density. This is 2014.

Write for users, not google. If everything reads smoothly and your keywords aren't out of place, then your fine.

If anything, just make sure your title sounds interesting enough to click on. This will help your seo much more than some irrelevant percentage.

Write as you can write and don't do things for Google. If your articles sounds artificial to Google you can be considered as over-optimizzator and you can get worst results then write natural and genuine contents.

I've got competitors ranked number 1 for a medium difficulty kw that I've been trying to rank for with a kw density of 14% for that exact term on the page, and only 200 ish words on the page. They've been there for a few years now ;)

No onpage SEO even.. No H1 tags or any of that jazz, just a well structured website and a really nice homepage backlink from a PR4 page that is very relevant (among some others that arent even close to that quality).

Always do search for your term (keyword) in google and look on first 6 results and what KW density they use.
Try to make something in between all of those.

"Natural and unique contents" definition of a newbie. Google sucks at reading content and it certainly can't tell which is "well-written". If you want to make money and scale - figure out a way to make content work for you. Don't listen to the tards on this thread. Take an article stuff that bitch with 1-2% density and nuke it with PBN + spam (GSA) + SAPE (optional). Wait a few weeks to rank. Boom. Your making money baby - quit your shitty ass job!

Google can absolutely tell what is well written and what is not.

If something sucks to read, people bounce. Google sees this then knows your content sucks.

For an addict of seo, you are blowing it.

Ok you 90% chance have a 9-5 shitty job talking shit on this forum like a little nubbie. Spend time on content / design then watch your sites fail. While I use gibberish content, cloak, rank and bank in hyper-competitive markets. Suck on that, newbie.

P.s Google can ABSOLUTELY NOT tell what is "well written" you are VERY wrong. I rank sites with shit content every day.

Also maybe you should listen to your savior Matt Cunts more because google does not use bounce rate to determine rank. Matty boy said that himself.

In theory, you are right, and I wish things were that easy. However, in my niche alone, there's quite a few sites with absolutely retarded content that rank very high. And it's not like it's some blackhatter getting his 15 minutes, one of the sites has been top 3 for a very high search volume money keyword for close to a year now.

What can I say about keyword density is that, yeah 2 something is what you should aim for. I have seen sites that rank high with insane keyword density as well, but mostly they are either high authority sites or sites that rank for keywords with barely any competition at all.

ok......
I am writing as a priority to actually benefit the reader, I want something long term. The article are well written but I am worried about keyword density because I read that over optimizing it will screw up the rankings.
does this mean I am on the right track ?

No google cannot decide whats well written and whats not . It is a fucking Computer .

If this was the case , you won't be able to rank foreign keywords with spun english garbage .

These days I try to avoid putting my keyword in all three of the:

1) Title
2) URL
3) Description

Try putting it in 2 of them then using a synonym for the 3rd.

Title: Best dog training tips
URL: domain.com/dog-training-tips
Description: Check out our advice resource for canine obedience.

There are two companies that hire people to rate websites for quality everyday. Lionbridge, and Leapforce. I used to work for them and there are other members of this forum who have worked with them too.

The job of the raters is to rate the individual webpages in the top 10 spots of a search query as to whether these results are of high quality and and related or not to the intent of the searcher.

We had to decide on if the site was spam or porn too.

Each query was worked on by 6 workers, and they had to all agree on the final rating of the website. If everyone said it was poor quality or spam, it quite likely got put into the supplemental index.

A site in the supplemental index will show up for the site: query, but it will never rank.

Now i realize that there are a billion websites out there, so the odds are that your site may never get seen but the idea that Google cannot tell a quality site from a poor quality site is flat wrong, we did it day in and day out, week after week, month after month until you want scratch your eyes out.

We are talking algorithmically.. Not manual action. The algorithm blows at determining quality.

There is so much misinformation on this thread and generally on BHW about this concept. Anyone who says Google can decide if an article is "well-written" or not has no idea what he is talking about. Please take some damn lessons in programming first and artificial intelligence. You need to understand there are 2 major cases: manual action and algorithmic one.

With manual action, HUMANS read your articles and they are not kids, so they will flag your website if you write shit. However, this happens in spam queries/keywords (such as payday loans) and other super-tough competitive niches. Chances are, except the big players, you are not in one of them.

Eliminating the first option, we come to the 2nd one. An ALGORITHM, and a pretty good one (but with huge flaws as every complex algorithm is), decides where to rank your site. I am pretty sure you have all heard that Google is acquiring quantum computers, is getting better at determining article quality (algorithmically), is employing new AI systems bla bla... Maybe... Or maybe not.. The fact that in some niches you can still rank with spun content and sometimes pure shit/garbage one means they haven't yet.
So better get this through your mind.

However, that does not mean you can write entirely shit and expect to rank. After the LSI Update, Google can detect if your article is "relevant" enough by cross-checking its huge databases with your article's certain keywords. This means that if you want to rank for "dog training" and your article includes keywords such as "puppy training", "dog obedience", etc.. your percentages of ranking higher will increase. If you don't include them, they go down, because simply your article isn't "relevant" enough.
But this does not mean that, if you have a spun sentence that doesn't make much sense but you still include the necessary keywords, Google can detect that. Don't be stupid, you need logic for that and computers have their own logic, not ours.

And yes, bounce rate is a factor that determines where you rank or not. The whole reason we write engaging content on the first page is for visitors, because shit content = low conversions = no money. Not for Google. But write awesome content and skip the rules that the algorithm is made from and only your grandma will read that content, because it won't get ranked lol..

Clearing these things out, @OP: Yes, keyword density matters a lot, especially total page keyword density (not just the article). Please refer to phpbuilt thread, he explains it too much in detail and better than I would.

Why bother trying to understand how crappy your content can be? Why not focus instead on how good you can make it? Seems like a better plan to me.
