Switching from shared hosting to VPS

I'm with GoDaddy and my Wordpress site is currently on a shared hosting account, but I just got a VPS and need to switch it over. How is this done?

I have BackUpBuddy which makes it really easy to migrate the files and database, so that's not the problem. I have migrated sites to different domains before. But I have never migrated to a different server before and I'm confused with the process because I'm keeping the same domain and everything.

How do I migrate to the VPS without pulling the domain from the old server to move to the new one? I need the current Wordpress installation to stay intact so I can do the migration with BackUpBuddy, but I need that same domain to be in place at the new server so I can make the switch...

Here are the steps that I use to migrate clients from a shared hosting account to a VPS:

1) Setup the VPS fully
2) Take a full backup of the WordPress HTTP files as well as MySQL database on the shared hosting server.
3) Transfer the backup of the HTTP files and MySQL database to the VPS
4) Restore backup files on the VPS.
5) Change the nameservers of the domain so that the domain now points to the VPS.

Once the DNS updates, the domain should be pointing to the VPS without any issues.

its not as easy as it sounds
did you get a control panel with the vps like cpanel or something pre installed?
if so then you can do it as stated above or else you will have to manually configure your vps

most places offer free migration services to move everything for you - so contact new host and get them to do it for you.

then just forward the name servers - and your golden.

Actually, if both your shared hosting server and VPS have cPanel there is an option inside of WHM which will automatically transfer your account and files for you. The exact path to access this is below:

From Your VPS WHM >> Transfers >> Copy an Account from Another Server with Account Password

*Note that this will only work if both your shared hosting account and VPS are cPanel based*

+1 Get the VPS host to migrate.

There will be plenty more what da fugs...
Left HG and everything was outdated compared to the VPS migrating to.
Mostly circled around EasyApache fixes. WHM is on a new level.

No they're going to make me pay to have them do the migration for me. Which is bullshit, but whatever I just need it done

If both have cPanel then the problem is solved, do the migration like DaringHost suggested

Think about the cost's a cPanel license costs $14 for VPS and Around $33 for Dedicated servers, I would just look for another shared hosting service that has Nginx, CDN, And a nice allotment of CPU for packages.

I had vps from Digital Ocean, without cPanel. I just installed wordpress manually and use WP Clone to transfer my websites. Worked fine for me.

Hopefully everything is moved on to your VPS by now, however WHM is like the admin end of cPanel. To access it you would enter the following URL into your web browser https : // YourVPSIPAddress : 2087 (There should be no spaces. For some reason I still can't post links here yet ) . Your username to log into WHM will be "root" and your password will be the root password for your VPS.

I've used this method to migrate a countless number of accounts, and never had any hiccups or issues with it.

Ask your VPS provider, They might have free site migration service OR if you have VPS with WHM then you can easily move your site via WHM....

Yes just open up a ticket with your new VPS provider and they will take care of everything for free. Mediatemple did that for me moving files from Host Gator.

I think web hosts would only do the migration free of charge if one is ordering a dedicated server.
