What about building backlinks?
This is like the most important job in this process, together with quality of the articles, easy access of your website and ad placements.

Could you elaborate please? My main thinking was that I want to get a decent base of articles on the site before I start doing anything else with it, I'm looking to get about 15 good quality articles and then start working on the oh-so-confusing SEO. I am currently working my articles so that they all relate to each other and there is quite a lot of interlinking in each article. I'm currently using an outdated Thesis theme but have been thinking about changing it before I grow my site a little as I'm not sure it's the right one for me? That said, my site looks very plain, there are no distractions from the text and everything is easily readable, is there any need to change if that's the case?
You could have articles written by Tolkein but with modern google you would get nowhere without backlinks. Google ranks your website based on 2 main things, quality and backlinks. You can have the best articles ever written but unless there are other sites out there pointing towards yours google will just assume your site is crap. On the other hand you can have pure duplicated content but if you have brilliant backlinks google will love you. Check out some of the pure blackhat journeys on here for examples of people just taking the RSS feeds from other sites and adding backlinks yet banking hundreds/thousands.
Good luck mate! As many have said a very realistic target to start with. I myself am trying to do something similar, I am lucky at the moment if I made 0.25p per day, but it's a start and I am happy to even see that! - I am in a very crowed niche and there's a lot of competition, who have a lot of weight and money they throw at it, I am just happy to enjoy doing what I love and hopefully make something from it. I hope you continue to post your progress, I will be happy to follow it.

I've taken what you said and had a look at the other journeys and, with regards to link building, come across these two services:
Sherlock Hacks Google Part II
Lady Gaga Google Rider
(I can't post links yet so if you use the search funtion you should be able to find them)
They both look ideal for building back links and they look like they'd do a much better job than I'd be able to do personally, and they're within my budget. Does anyone have experience in using these two products? Also, would it be a bad idea to use one of them on my website which is just over a week old?
In terms of content, please bare with the newbie questions as I'm very new to this, would it be OK for me to manually spin articles I find (reword them without the use of a spinner) and stick them up so I have as much content as possible in as little time as possible and then use the tools above?

So last night I uploaded one more article onto my first website, bringing my total to 9. I've become obsessed with tracking Google Analytics and I'm quite disappointed to see that I'm not getting millions of visitors yet ! It looks like after prompting the seller about my 3 micro niche sites he's put them on priority and I checked them this morning and they're looking pretty great, looking forward to receiving the finished sites, adding a few more articles to them (I don't think they'll really need any more though) and then getting them ranking in Google.

No reason why manually spinning articles wouldn't work, so long as you do a decent job to keep the completely unique and avoid duplicate content. Of course, finding a supplier for original articles that you're happy with would be a big advantage too, so you can concentrate on other things knowing the content is being taken care of.

Yes hctap do it because links in social media means more backlinks to your webpage, which in the future will be better ranking
