A subdomain is similar to a new domain which has an equal chance of ranking if proper onpage and offpage factors are addressed.

Earlier posted are right. There's nothing magical or bad about a sub-domain. IF you want traffic, you can either get it through black hat methods but don't be surprised when you get caught that the site is banned though I've seen some sites never get caught.

Or white hat methods. Either way, if you're not on the first couple of pages, you aren't really in the search engines. Most people click on first page results only and if they don't find it, will change their search keyword. Heck, most people only click on the first 1-5 results of the first page.
